| | Looking for help with a possible drainhole < on 5/26/2012 10:07 PM >
| | | Hey everybody, I recently came across this when hiking around a lake:
and I was wondering whether any of you might have an idea as to what it might be. Could it be a drainhole of sorts? Do you think it is worth exploring more closely? Maybe even try to get inside? And if so, what would be the best technique to get into it? Any help or ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks a lot!

| | | Might be an overflow for the lake? I wouldnt suggest going in there if the waters right at the edge. You dont want the lake rising and water come flooding down there while youre walking around.

| | | I don't think there's any reason to go inside that unless you know where the exit is and you have a decent long/skate/board. I have a fear of lakes and deep water so you couldn't get me to go in that even if you paid me.

Exactly this... If you were in drought conditions and the lake were real low, like at least 6" below the top of the drain I might check it out. I'd bet it leads to a river or a larger lake. That being said, this just comes from my general knowledge of storm drain systems and whatnot... I've never done drains. [last edit 5/26/2012 11:30 PM by ILexplorer - edited 1 times]

| | | Do you enjoy being alive? Then I'd stay away from it because it is the mouth of a very deep hole. Google "Bell mouth spillway" http://twistedsift...ll-mout-spillways/
It is possible to explore them but it will involve rope and the appropriate vertical access equipment. alternately- you could enter the outfall in a boat and avoid the whole drain drop of doom.

| | | Find the side of the lake that is a dam. The spillway goes under that. Usually it's a 3' pipe. Sometimes there is a neat room under the infall tower. Don't go in if it may rain soon. A skateboard will help if it's concrete, but don't use a nice one. Mud trashes bearings. Oh, look for spiders. They congregate where drains reach the surface. Wear a baseball cap, it helps.

| | | Yeah, this is definitely a bell spillway opening. I would wager a small amount that the lake in the OP's picture is actually a reservoir on the upside of a dam. The other option is that this is just a basic retention pond. Dam or retention pond (realistically they are close to the same thing), I would definitely follow other members suggestions of wither entering from the inlet or using a very secure rope system to explore in a dry condition. Another feature I would look for at this site is is some kind of regulatory gate or weir. The bell spillway feature inherently has no mechanism for controlling the flow of water that passes through it. Generally a dam will use a regulating gate to control the flow of water downstream whereas the bell spillway exists strictly to make sure the reservoir does not flood. Here is a picture of a medium sized gate system. I would imagine that if one exists where you are at, it will be much smaller. As you can see, there is a mechanical means to raise and lower the gates to either let more water downstream in dry season or hold water in wet season. (picture not OC)
Try looking at a topographical map of the area and I would say you have a good chance of locating the outfall of that feature for exportation!
The only question I have is why they are utilizing this bell spillway instead of of a typical sloped spillway (pictured, not OC). An interesting thought. Possibly I think the outfall of the location might be a sort of storm drain as opposed to an open waterway, just a hypothesis. Please let us know what you find.

| | | These are usually not bell-mouths. Ones that close to water level are usually prettified overflow regulators, not emergency flood spillways. Look for a pipe nearby at the base of the dam used to make the lake.

I got it, now. You mean her pronunciation. I thought you ment her choice of words. "Abseiling" is apparently more commonly used in other English-speaking countries, while "repelling" is normal American usage.
