Rural suburbia exists…But for how long?
‘burb’exing: The final frontier.
1.
Until five or six years ago, much of the land in my town looked just like this…

2.
until they started raping the crap out of it to build office complexes and superfluous retail centers. I mean, do we really need another dental or law office?? Even more obnoxious is that, once completed, these strip centers often sit tenantless.

Commerce and development are quickly encroaching upon this tiny pastoral pocket where a one bedroom farmhouse sits on a few acres bordered by fancy new upper-class residences and shopping malls.

3.There was a very peaceful vibe to this place.
4.I felt at ease during my time there, even though I’m still a novice explorer. The only moderately intense moments I experienced were going over the fence and back, and seeing a brown recluse?wolf spider? in shed #1.

I expected the house to be hot & stuffy, but it wasn’t.
5.Probably b/c breezes pass through easily what with all the holes in this place. Bugs, leaves and mice do too, apparently.

I was delighted to find no evidence of vandalism present anywhere on this property. Although the window pane from the back door was in ruins, the way the glass appeared merely broken rather than smashed; and since there was no other indication that a violent act had occurred, I believe it met its demise via natural causes.
6.
No one had treaded through the glass, either. The shards were still in their original landing place: some resting inside the house, some on the outside. Probably a casualty of crazy Texas weather.
7.
Another reason I don’t believe the back window was intentionally shattered: the two entry doors in front were wide open. Not just unlocked, but ajar. There would be no reason for B&E.
8.
The wooden front porch contained two doors: the first one I entered led to a utility room with washer/dryer hook-ups.
9.
This room led to a hallway where the attic access was open with the ladder pulled down.
10.Looking through the open attic access you could see sunlight shining through gaps in the roof. This is probably why both the utility room & the kitchen had good size portions of ceiling that had fallen through from water damage.
11.
The other door on the porch, the formal entrance to the home, opened up to what seemed like a generic, square bedroom, but I think it was probably intended to be a living room.
12.
This room contained a door to a second room—probably a bedroom, since there was a closet. Both rooms connected to a small hallway. The bathroom was on the other side of the hallway.
13.
The 2nd bedroom connected to a room in the back of the house which also adjoined the kitchen. This back room was probably the dining room/family room.
14.
The kitchen was in the back of the house, connected to the family room & hallway. It contained an exposed water heater, old looking stove, 90’s-era dishwasher, empty cabinets…
15.…two old chairs….
16....lots of rat droppings…
17.and…orbs!
18.
Every room had a light switch faceplate depicting a cowboy...
19.20.…or a Southwestern scene.
21.And one electrical outlet had a dancing kokopelli.
22.
There was no sign whatsoever that anyone has been in this place for awhile.
23.
And unlike most abandoned properties you see, the previous tenants cleaned up pretty well and left (almost) no articles behind. Except for in the sheds…
24.
The storage sheds held some intriguing items:

Shed #1 seemed to be designated for holiday decorations…
25.…records…
26.(Checks made out to “Food Lion” and “Show Off Fashion”. Date: 1991)
…mementos and keepsakes…
27.(Graduation cap partially covering a baby doll.)
…and general household storage.
28.
Shed #2 seemed to be reserved for tools, various tractor and car parts…
29.30.
…and souvenir Playboy mugs.
31.
The county tax website shows this property had the same owner (a Mr. & Mrs.) from the ‘40’s until it was transferred to the Mr. & Mrs.’ Living Trust in ’97, then from the Trust to the Mrs. in 3/07 (the Mr. likely died), and finally from the Mrs. to Random Company, LLC in 4/07. I could not find a single shred of info on the Mr. & Mrs. or the LLC.
32.
Soon this rural enclave will merge with the neighboring commercial properties. Already the acreage is punctured with For Sale signs. Here you can see the red roof of a nearby shopping center through the windows of the back room of the house.
33.
Only a matter of time, I’m sure, before this place is razed, too.

Thank you! I enjoyed this exploration very much. I hope to check out the larger farmhouse nearby very soon. Stay tuned!

Well, sad to say, but the LLC will probably turn it into condos.

Just another part of the "Greed Factor".
