Freshly abandoned flophouse, anyone?

Who says there’s nothing left to explore in the suburbs??

So there are these three seedy hotels that sit in a row right next to the I-35E southbound service road. They have been here in town for at least 30 years, probably longer. Changed owners a few times. You could tell each time the buildings changed hands an attempt was made to revamp the hotel’s image, but they were lousy attempts, and nothing really changed. Located in a shitty part of town, everyone around here knows these hotels are havens for drug traffickers, prostitutes, drifters and low-lifes. One of them is located next door to a skating rink, so the sight of crackheads milling around the parking lot while you’re leaving a birthday party with your kid is not uncommon.

I drive by every day on my commute to work, and find it amusing to take note of the activity there and daydream about what kind of craziness goes down behind closed doors. Recently I noticed that the parking lots had been deserted for a few days. The plastic letters that spelled out “Free B-fast” had been removed from the marquee sign. Soon one of those temporary chain-link fences they put up around constructions sites had been erected around all three hotels. In my neck of the woods, this is a sign of imminent bulldozing. When I passed the first property today, the doors to all the rooms were open and it appeared that the a/c units from each room had been extracted and were laying out front. Apparently the gutting has begun.

When I started researching these three properties online I was shocked to see reviews from out-of-towners who actually made reservations at these roach motels!! Sad. And a bit comical. The reviews say it all:

Reviewed April 21, 2012
My husband and I stayed there Wed. and the place was dirty, The sheets were so old you could see through them. There were no paper cups to drink out of the beds looked like they had been slept on , the furniture was worse than any I've seen at Goodwill and the shower curtain just barely touched the top of the tub. The ceiling had flaked paint where it had leaked. The door was hard to open with the key given and I could hardly wait to get out of there. We will never stay at ABVI again. On the bed was only a spread and no blanket to cover with.

I find it hilarious that this review was submitted on 4/21/12—a mere week before the place shut down! Had to be in just awful condition at that point, knowing they were about to close down.

“Never again”

I did not feel safe during my stay, the door had diffculty shutting completely. The bathroom door had holes knocked in it. The faucet handle fell off. Ceiling was discolored from water leak. It was a bad experience and I stay at hotels frequently.

Worst Hotel Ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/5/11
I would not recommend, outlets missing covers, ceiling falling apart, broken beds, filthy carpets, old towels, dirty, roaches, by far the worst place to stay at. Doors missing security latch, bathrooms and showers filthy, bathroom door had a 3 inch gap, TV has no cable, Breakfast is misleading, old doughnuts, one gallon of milk for everyone, poor lighting, tenants seem to be long term or hourly renters! Not a place for family!!!!

From Yelp, 2/20/12
So decided to save a buck today and I got way more than I ever wanted to bargain for! I checked in and the first encounter was at the front desk obiously. Initially "the guy" said it was 59.99 and when I called him out on his advertisment of 39.99 he honored it. "You snooze, you lose" kind of situation. I asked for a late checkout and the guy told me the latest they could do was 1130. The girl next to him told the guy she was helping (scary looking dude) that the latest they could do was noon. I said nothing. The guy helping me immediately jumped in and told her "latest is 1130" she said "Don't worry we will give you till noon tomorrow, no charge. Ok, that's cool. What I never knew was that I wouldn't EVER even make it past 1pm.

I got to my room and my first impression was EWW..smelled like smoke and Lord know what else! I was super tired from driving so I said to myself "I'm just picky". I threw myself in bed and thought "gross" right before falling asleep for a couple of hours. I woke up and turned on the OLD SCHOOL TV!! This place doesn't invest ANY of it's money in trying to make the place stay up to date at all. All the bedding, curtains, wall paper is OUTDATED to the core!!

Of course this is just a sampling, but not a single positive review was to be found on any travel site for any of the three hotels!! Which makes them all the more intriguing, IMO.

Anyone have experience with this kind of property? Are these hotels worth scoping out for an exploration? Risks include: Location—-a highly visible, busy commercial area right next to the freeway. Bad part of town. Possible active demolition site. Hobos & Crackheads.

Old motels are kinda cool to explore but you seen one youve pretty much seen them all

I think the sleeze factor sort of appealed to me as well as some of the nostalgia hwy stuff and retro decor like the Sahara or that one in Midland they filmed that movie in...or the one down in Oak Cliff world renowned for crack dealing

I say if your comfortable, check it out. Maybe do a few scouting trips as it is in your daily travels then gauge it from there. If you notice a lot of work going on, maybe do a night explore. If the crackheads are around at night, maybe just skip it.

My experience is that hotels and motels are not worth it. As 2x said, seen one, seen them all.

All the rooms are the same layout, with the same stuff, and most are torn up really fast (scrapper, kids). The thing with hotels is that they are not closed until they absolutely have to be and they are usually shitholes by that time. I know budda will never go into one again since everytime he does he gets endlessly sick. They aren't nice places to stay in before they close, they won't be after they close.

Of course, you will want to know to go see. If you have never beento one, then by all means, go. just to say you have, I suppose. You might find something neat.

I am sure budda will come take a look at this thread and have about the same thing to say

Yes, but only because the word catcher brought me here. But it's exactly what Astro said. By the time they close, they're usually so full of mold they should have been condemned years before, so do wear a respirator.

There are still some cool behind the scenes areas sometimes, but usually just a greasy dirty kitchen, that in the case of Cincinnati North had freezers still full of 3 year rotten meat.

So if you want to smell like shit for 3 days, Do it!!!!

i have been to a few, and yeah, boring after the first 2 or 3.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

They aren't the most exciting places but I have to say I found one of the strangest items ever in one: a fetish magazine featuring women's feet fondling by someone dressed as a giant bunny in a tuxedo.

Yup it’s me. And Astro’s profile pic is a self-portrait, too. ;)

very cool.

Thanks for the compliment.

I’ll try. I also enjoy the retro stuff.

Maybe do a few scouting trips as it is in your daily travels then gauge it from there. If you notice a lot of work going on, maybe do a night explore.

I have noticed vehicles and evidence of workers there. Way too busy to attempt an exploration right now. It’s natural for me to feel a sense of urgency like this since these places get torn down so quickly. I’d prefer to wait for a bit of decay to take shape, some nature to make its way inside and the like, but stuff like this doesn’t last long in these parts.

Perhaps will keep this one on the back burner for now. Still trying to procure a decent camera anyways.

I know budda will never go into one again since everytime he does he gets endlessly sick.

Getting sick hadn’t even crossed my mind. Yikes. Good point.

However...

…hmmm…now I’m intrigued.
