Well, for the most part you are safe, the rain is what usually causes the floods. And back washing a pool, and flushing out a fire hydrant are fairly uncommon occurences (not to mention back washing a pool into storm drains is illegal, at least around here it is.) The only unforeseeable thing that could cause a flood that I can think of, is the small chance there is some sort of remote controlled dam somewhere in the system which could open and wash you out, but I have only seen something like that once and it is only emptied in the winter so a manmade lake doesn't freeze. And it is a common misconception that it is easy to get lost in drains, you really just go back the way you came. And you can always mark walls with chalk as a guide to get back. Just be safe and use common sense, check the weather report before going in, leave if you see the water level rising, and take any opportunity you can to look out of the drain, like peeking out of a gutter box, etc.

Great advice! About what I was going to post except the chalk markings. Never thought about that.

No, you don't need chalk. It's a storm drain, not some mystical underground labyrinth. If you can follow a creek then chances are you (yes, even you) can manage to go draining without getting lost. If you're really stuck, then simply turn around and walk in the opposite direction until you get back to where you started from.

Still, despite my excellent sense of direction, even Tastee get's lost sometimes.
(ain't I modest?) anyways, the chalk is actually a good idea, especially the deeper you get into the tunnels.

Of course, if all else fails, find a manhole and hope it isn't welded shut.

Entry to the rooftop playground is free, if you look up enough to know it's there.

What do you mean they aren't mystical labyrinths?! Are you trying to tell me that they are just pipes put there by city workers, no mystical beasts? Well shucks, I can't believe I have been carrying my sword with me all this time in hopes of slaying a dragon. But seriously, I've never had to use chalk, but if you are seriously afraid of getting lost and it makes you feel better, why not?

Rookie Question: Do all drains have enough room to walk upright or is this something usually confined to large cities? I ask because I live in a small community with small towns. I could always drive a few hours to go to ATL for draining but I was wondering if it's possible to do it locally. I guess I've always pictured the drains as just being pipes laid underground, not full tunnels you can walk around in.

its true, most storm drains are too small to walk in and most large storm drains are in large cities

These first three were a little tiny drain I had to crawl through on my belly for about fifty feet.

3.

I gave up on that and took about half an hour crawling backwards, then I just walked along the river until I found a larger outfall:
4.

Where I could do this:
2.

That one then opened into a seven foot tall storm drain, which I have yet to fully explore.
6.

Entrances can be deceiving, and don't give up.

Edit: the order of pictures got all messed up for some reason.

My addition to the drains...

Sadly I am still looking for some corridors, only gotten into mainly direct drains, no forks, or redirection pipes. I do have a location that I will check out soon, apparently it has corridors.

8. Oddly enough I could get cell coverage from standing underneath the manholes and grates, although that is just because I wasn't very far under.
