|  | | | I haven't been exploring as much as I would like lately. Moved, got married, now I'm looking for a new job...blah blah blah. I realized the other day that I need to make time for it. So, I finally got around to lugging the field camera to an abandonment for the first time. I've only been shooting large format for a couple of months so any advice would be appreciated very much.

I realize that #1 and #2 are pretty similar shots. I'm wondering which one you guys think is the better shot out of the two.

| | | | Thank you very much. Too be honest though...this is probably about the easiest abandonment to get into that I know of. I don't know how I'd do if I brought it to a place where there was any risk of getting caught and/or dangerous floors and such.

| | | | 1 and 2 could both use at least a stop more exposure to bring in the shadows and push up the highlights a little. Also 2 looks like the window was crudely burned in. #2 is in my opinion has a better composition that #1 though.
#4 is a crop. I want to see the whole picture.

| | | | Thanks Adv! I'm using Arista.edu ultra 100 speed. It's what my prof told us we should use for the semester until we get the hang of it but I already feel like I want faster film. I'm just getting used to reading a light meter that isn't part of the camera. It's not as easy as I thought it would be! #1 was a 16 min exposure at f45 and #2 was 18 mins at the same f stop. Also, you're right..the window was quickly burned in PS. Blown out highlights drive me batty but maybe it's better to just let them be blown out. If you can tell that it was burned, that's not good. I'm not so skilled in the PS editing of black and white film because up until recently I only processed film in a dark room. You're right about 4 too.. was cropped to straighten. It was shot at the end of a long day of shooting these really long exposures so I started to not give a shit about my comp. at that point. I wish I had done a better job on that one because I like the way it came out except for its crooked as fuck (which I'm discovering there really is no excuse for with a camera like this). I think I'm going to try to get back within the next couple of weeks and will take your advice

| | | | I like the concept of 2 over 1. 1 is just kinda 'here it is' and everyone who goes here has a similar shot. But 2 is more abstract and unusual. I haven't seen it done that way, I really like it

| | | | #1 doesn't really have a subject, and there's too much detail lost in the shadows on the left side. #2 is a better shot, but there is no white at all; it needs more contrast. Same with #4. In your quest to eliminate blown highlights, I think you're flattening your images and taking away some necessary punch. #3 works better in that regard.

It's something that's been drilled into my head by a very old-school professor of mine. I've seen some gorgeous photos on here with plenty of really bright whites. I think I need to re-edit these with that in mind.

| | | | Yeah I would have just let that window go. I would want it to be almost pure white. If you get it right in exposure and development you won't need to do anything in photoshop.
Also you never want to waste sheet film on a crooked shot.

No kidding! Even the student grade stuff I'm getting costs a small fortune! But I think it's totally worth it. I'm hooked. Don't even really enjoy shooting with my digital camera anymore. Can you recommend some film that's a bit faster? Despite what my prof thinks I should do...I'm dying to experiment with something else. What kind of film do you usually shoot with? I saw your stuff on flickr and was blown away

I don't shoot large format often but I use Ilford FP4 and Ilford HP5. HP5 is 400 speed so maybe you would like that. I prefer FP4 for this kind of stuff though.
