In addition to discovering my immunity to Nettles...

I seem to have stumbled onto some mines (at least I think they are) in the middle of the woods. Sadly, I wasn't equipped for it (no way to check oxygen, no rope, no backup lights).

They're cut into s cliff (See pic). Inside in HUGE. The ceilings are only about 5 feet high, but it goes on forever and a day. How would I go about dating it or finding out what it was used for?

Well, if they are actual mines you will usually find some kind of man-made constructions around the outside and immediately inside to show it was a worked hole. If those things are evident, you can use the internet to look up the location (via GPS coordinates) on one of the several mine registers that exist. At least if it was worked in the last 75 or so years.

If you can't find any direct evidence of man-made construction around it, you can generally tell if it was a mine by the hole itself, angular walls and floors. Non-rock braces (wood or metal) and such.

You'd be surprised how many actual cave systems look like mines, and the number of uncharted cave systems is beyond count.

If you literally stumbled upon a mine, you'd blow up. Is this a war zone, by chance?

They just look like caves to me. Which are still awesome. I'd like to see pics of what it looks like inside if possible.

(and don't bank on that immunity forever...I've been immune to poison ivy for the past ten years and it's just now gone away. It's been a very itchy spring.)

Well, from what I saw inside, there was a panoply of bricks and some railroad ties sitting on their ends. They were sandwiched between the floor and the ceiling (which didn't have many cracks!) There we also some metal bits jammed into the walls near the ceiling/some drilled looking holes.

If anyone knows where to research this, it's in NW Utica, IL.

I have access to a special resource known as "Google".

A quick search of "Utica IL caves", found this:

"The Pecumsaugan Creek area has beautiful dolomite cliffs, dolomite prairie, upland forest, floodplain forest and savanna communities of the Grand Prairie Natural Division. The preserve is best known for the large abandoned limestone mine and its colonies of bats. Blackball Mine is one of the largest bat hibernacula in Illinois."

http://dnr.state.i...es/area3/pecls.htm

It is West of North Utica. Is that the area you are looking for?

In addition to Blackball Mine, Starved Rock comes up in my search.

I was a few miles east of there, but I had considered it. Could they possibly be linked to the main mine (Which the DNR sealed up)?

Let us know what you find when you go back.

I doubt you need to worry about oxygen, but I have no idea because that picture isn't enough for anyone to draw any conclusions from without actually physically being at the location. But in my experience, I've only run into air issues in sewers, confined spaces and just reopened caves that sat for decades with no air flow until just opened. You will be able to tell if there is low oxygen, it will be hard to breathe, just leave if that happens. If you can feel air flow at that POE, it's probably fine.

Nettles are a very unassuming tall plant with very robust foliage. The plant has many hollow stinging hairs called trichomes on its leaves and stems, which act like hypodermic needles, injecting histamine and other chemicals that produce a stinging sensation when contacted by humans and other animals. They grow very tall and produce small purple flowers at the top of the plant

If you do come in contact with them, wash the affected area immediatly with warm water and mild soap.If out exploring and you don't have access to water, spit on the area, saliva neutralizes the chemicals

In other words STAY AWAY FROM THEM
