A "not safe" 200 foot smokestack sounds like an excellent idea for an inexperienced climbers first attempt!

Hope you realize this is sarcasm (pretty good sarcasm at that!) Please try something a little smaller, as suggested, and learn as you go.

(Oh, BTW: I've read somewhere that the rungs nearest the top of tall stacks are dangerously unreliable, having been zapped by so many lightning strikes that there's not much left to them.)

Of coarse he realizes it is sarcasm, there is even a little smiley face! But then again, looking a what he is considering, you may have been wise to clarify that for him.

Life in general has inherent risks. We accept more risks by exploring, but that doesn't mean we can't prepare ourselves properly to minimize them.

I would've considered talking to him if he didn't sound so mad, and I guess I can see your point about scrappers and arsonists... there's graffiti and trash in some places so not everyone who goes there has good intentions (surprise surprise). Also I'm not completely inexperience, I've done some climbing before, both in UE on some long ladders, and some rock climbing at the gym, but never anything where I climb a ladder while using a rope... Or where there's had a 200 ft fall.

I realized it was sarcasm, and I understand that its not the smartest thing to do, that's why I am 1. not a 100% sure if I'm ever going to climb it, and 2. asking for advice. Also like I said I'm not a completely inexperienced climber, I've used harnesses before, and done a bit of rappelling. However I'm not nearly as good as I'm sure some of you are. So thanks for the advice people, I'm going to take a couple classes learn a bit more, read up on smokestacks, climb some smaller things, and then eventually attempt this if I think its safe.

Also '*our faces', my bad.

Oh and thanks for the link Vadder, that's a scary story... making me think twice about it.

I reccommend investing in a scanner app though.

Why paying if they already have this for free?

This. He doesn't own the place, why should he care what I do there?

Also on a related note, I'm thinking of climbing the 200 foot smokestack, i know its not safe, but can anyone who knows about climbing give me some advice? I was considering attaching carabiners every now and then to stop my fall if the rungs got pulled out. The ladder is arranged in 7 foot segments, so this way, even if one section came loose, I'd still have another one to fall down onto. Any advice would be much appreciated

Now rock climbing and this kind of climbing is a little bit different.
In rock climbing, when you have a belayer, the rope and this person will be the dynamic element you need to be not die in this fall.
You might want to read about tower climbing on this one.

Your first post gave me the impression you had no experience. Now I see I was wrong.

You are on the right track. You know more about climbing than I do. I can't give you advise there.

Where I am qualified to give advise is about risk. Life is full of risks. Risk can not be avoided. You are better off taking some risks and getting more out of life. Don't take dumb risks. Do as you are doing and take efforts to minimize and prepare for risks. Then, go for it!

Leave it be. One loose brick from above will ruin everything.

If it's so old that the rungs have corroded to the point of be unclimbable there's most likely more and worse structural damage.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

Hey, I'm in Fort Collins, and I'd be willing to teach you some simple ropework and rigging. I'm always up for some climbing.

My question is...Which smokestack are you planning on doing around Northern Colorado?

...A sugar mill?
