| | Karate chop an enemy? < on 4/22/2012 5:41 AM >
| | | I tried searching for something along the lines of self defense and couldn't find anything, but do any of you take/have taken self defense class for the purpose of running into possible threats? Or do you guys prefer to smack them with your tripod or flee? Just wondering!

| | | Read this: http://www.cracked...t-fighting_p2.html (the whole thing is good but specifically points 2 & 1) That aside, let's say you get cornered by a rapist on pcp: If you have a tripod bring it up like a baseball bat, make like you're going to swing it at their head (they'll raise their hands instinctively to protect their head and upper torso) then swing it downward full force for a direct hit to the knee. Can't stand, can't fight. Then run like hell.

| | | Karate chops? Are you kidding me? The only people I've encountered have been homeless... one told me a vulgar joke about Mickey and Minnie Mouse, the next one was woken at 4 AM as I climbed up beside him under a bridge and turned on my flashlight, and another asked for 60 cents and got mad when I didn't give it to him.
The best thing you can do is to run away, or if necessary, bash them with your tripod. You don't want to risk getting stabbed and slashed when you try to karate chop some raggedy street person.

Hahahah guess self defense classes would be a waste of money. I'll stick with using the good ol' fist-o-fury. Thanks for the links lol

I'm only askin' haha relax. I've only run into homeless so far as well, and all have been really nice actually. I'm only thinking in worst case scenarios where as your instincts decide to fail, but I guess that's all the risk of UE.

| | | Although the atmosphere while exploring is often similar to that of video games, there seems to be a serious disparity in the number of enemies one encounters while exploring compared to that while gaming. If you find yourself in a situation where there are hordes of monsters or even the occasional zombie, I would suggest a better weapon than a karate chop. Think something along the lines of a shotgun with slugs, not birdshot, or perhaps a nice high powered rifle. As for normal exploring conditions encountered in this day and age, I would suggest avoiding or evading security guards, gang bangers and meth cooks. Police and hobos should not be viewed as "enemies" necessarily. They should be avoided as well, but I would attempt a civil exchange with them before karate chopping.

And that's why I have my boy for that as he carries the goodies that make the homeless our best friends. I actually do need to get better shoes...I wear my old beat up converse for all UE..

I'd rather be fending of a zombie hoard than security guards and meth cooks anytime lol. Unfortunately I don't have a shotgun or rifle, so my best bet is karate chop to the neck haha jk. And no I wasn't talking about security or hobos being enemies, just the crazy ones.

| | | Evade and elude. Spot/hear them before they see you. Always be on the look out for company. Maintain noise and light discipline, no phone chatter, don't smoke, and lay low until you have the place scoped out. Know the best escape routes and the spots where you can hide, run/hide. Hide as long as it takes. No bright colors, no blues, I tend to wear camo that's good for hiding. If it seems too dangerous, it probably is. Not putting yourself into high risk situations is the best way to avoid trouble even when armed.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

| | | A lot of people tend to be pretty chill about almost anything, even scrappers tend to prefer to just be left alone. But yeah, a pack of smokes is usually a good bargain tool. Or just go with it, or look like you're going with it, then run like hell. I spent some time last Christmas break with some old friends in Calgary, they took me down into some old drains and we ran into a pack of homeless. One guy offered us a puff on his joint, the other just sort of look at us a little curious. We tossed up the pack of cigs my friend had brought along, and they practically hugged us. We all stuck around for a few puffs, then hoofed it deeper into the tunnels. I actually made some pretty civil conversation with them. Then we spent the night in a sewer vent shaft (actually quite warm for December) and left the next day, said hi to the same guys on the way out. I always bring a pack of cigarettes and a lighter with me every time I go out now.

| | | op your thinking too much about it. fighting is always the worst thing you can do because you really have no idea who the person your fighting is or what they have in their pocket. i cant really think of a situation where it would be better to fight rather then run.

| | | Oh yeah, my boy's always got the smokes so we're good on that. I'm not even worried about the homeless, just the sketchy lookin' ones but of course instincts would most likely be GTFO of there.

| | | Or you could just act really, really, really drunk. Like, passed out in a gutter drunk. Playing dead is actually a great way to have people leave you alone, unless of course they're a necrophile.... But in all honesty, no one, homeless or not, wants to be seen around a dead body. | | | I have carried on several trips, and while I don't recomend it I knew the consequences. 99% of UE activity involving contact with other people goes like this. Watch, move toward POE, Watch until person(s) are confirmed to be what you think they are. Leave Fast. [last edit 4/23/2012 2:11 PM by Mark - edited 1 times]
