Just popped my Urbex cherry....in the suburbs of Dallas

So I've always been fascinated by abandoned places, but never realized other people were until I stumbled upon this site. Lurked for awhile, then joined. Looking through all the posts made me really itch for an urbex adventure of my own. Problem is, I live in the suburbs where every inch of land contains a cookie-cutter house, retail store, is fenced in or otherwise heavily secured.

Did a few drive-by's in an area I knew had not yet been touched by the bulldozers of housing and retail development. Did some further investigation via Google Earth. Finally mustered up the courage to infiltrate this "Private Property" today. It was my first exploration ever. And it was exhilarating. I can't wait to create a full post of my adventure along with pictures, but I'm still learning how to navigate this site (just spent an hour figuring out how to resize this mofo. lol). So here is a little taste.

What is the difference between exploring and being lost?"

Welcome!

Many, if not most, of us are in the same situation. The fact that abandoned places are relatively rare probably explains a lot of the appeal of this hobby.

Thanks everyone!! So glad to be here.

Captain_Slow, I will definitely be sending you a pm in the near future. Really intrigued by your Mystery Island adventure on Lewisville Lake. A good friend and I have been studying the lake and its history for awhile. We have a spot staked out which we are making plans to explore. The only thing we are having trouble with is figuring out how to get to it. Will probably end up renting a small boat.

Looking forward to seeing explorations of familiar, local places and sharing my own with y'all.

I have an inflatable raft with only one oar but it can hold 2 to 3 people...and I'll also be moving back to the DFW area within a month or 2. Been wanting to get more active on the forums again and get out exploring, been a while since I've been to some good locations, just not a whole lot of great ones here in Austin where I've been the past year, everything keeps getting torn down very quickly. But if you'd like I'll PM you once I get back in the area if you don't mind one more tagging along and we could use my raft. Just let me know

Thanks for the offer, urbexinc. I'm afraid we may need some sort of motorized watercraft, though, as this location seems a bit remote. But there are lots of places closer to the shore to explore, for which the raft would be perfect. Maybe we could scrounge up another oar somehow. ;) Please do keep in touch. Perhaps a Lewisville Lake exploration group can be organized in the near future.

Sounds good to me...I have a few makeshift oars lol but I do plan on buying another set of oars for sure...and I do also have an inflatable mattress I've used in some tunnels before lol but I wouldn't recommend it, you'll still get a bit wet especially with two people on it. But yeah I'll keep in touch and let you know once I'm back in the area

Walmart has some extendable oars. They retract to about a foot and a half and then extend to about 5 feet.or so? I don't think they are too expensive either.

And I think I found an oar in my garage. I didn't really look though.
