I very politely told them, I've been coming to this spot for 20 years, I brought my kids, and later, my grandkids to this spot to sit and watch the ships and port traffic go buy.

Politeness is key. If you are respectful and honest, frankly you're going to get off easier (even if you have committed crime!). If you lie/are a tool, they're gonna go out of their way to find something to bust you with then use your disobedience as ammo against you in court.

From experience, the many times I have been pulled over for "speeding" (smoking pot), the cops clearly wanted to search my car. To do that, they would need a K-9 unit (for probable cause, dog sniffin' weed) or a warrant, but this is obviously time consuming. If you are not given a citation and they are trying to hold you up (obv. waiting for that dog/warrant), ask if you are free to leave. If they say no, then you have the right to ask why you are being detained, essentially you have to be given a citation or arrested. They can't just hold you there waiting, that's illegal detainment and against the law--- I was in exactly this situation and I was told I could not leave, he was waiting for "backup" to help him process paperwork. Low and behold, they showed up with a K-9 unit and found a tiny bag of weed in my pocket. I was arrested for operating under the influence.

The case was instantly thrown out because I have a dashboard cam (little trick I learned in Russia!) and my request to leave was clearly recorded. He was not allowed to hold me up without probable cause (the smell of weed is not probable cause in MA).

I may not believe in marriage, but I do believe in best men.
