When people assume that all religions are made up of holy-book-thumping, morally-bound, legally insane loons, I post another image.

There does seem to be some fairly significant evidence that religion leads more people to evil than Doctor Who does.

As a kinda not-religious, kinda not-science-book thumping, sorta agnostic but don't want to go to Hell guy, religion does SEEM to cause more trouble than it solves. Fair statement?

I'll see you that and raise you a Colin Baker. He makes me want to murder things violently.

I could only read about 3/4 of that before this happened.

Seriously though, pictures like that make me feel like the human race almost deserves to go extinct.

Interesting picture, KK, even thought reading it gave me a headache. But for balance, could we find some atrocities committed by atheists?

BTW, seeing those reminded me about a Nigerian Christian "holy woman" who KILLS CHILDREN for witchcraft who is going to be speaking at a church in Houston in March.

Balance?

I'm sure atheists have committed atrocities, however a causal connection might be a little harder to grasp than the rather well documented link of religion to atrocities.

How many wars have been fought because people asked for more evidence? How many people have murdered someone because they had an abundance of reason? How many women have been raped because it was scientifically determined that they were asking for it? How many children were starved to death for purely humanist ideals?

Remember: atheism is not a religion or a system of beliefs. It is simply the absence of belief in a god or gods.

On the other hand any belief in unreasonable ideas often facilitates, if not outright causes people to commit, at best, unreasonable acts, and at worst, unthinkable acts against their follow humans.

People that want "balance" will try and say Hitler was an athiest - not true. He was a Christian, and had a personal library of over 13,000 books of which many were religious (along with folklore and sexuality). The remnants of his library show he read religions books because there are marginal annotations in his hand and he underlined passages that moved him. Hitler's personal library has been discussed only recently.

I was only partially serious. I'm sure there's nut out there who said "Once I discovered there are no gods, I figured 'Why not?' and went on a killing spree."
Of course, this is a misunderstanding of how morality forms, but that's another story.

Klebold was a lutheran and he had jewish family connections. These facts are about as relevant as columbine is to this discussion. Just because an atrocity is not directly caused by religious motivations does not leave the only alternative cause to be atheism. There is also no known connection to any atheistic doctrine. They were a couple of psycho goth freaks.

Further to that neither one could be accused of having an over abundance of reason.

That's their parents' religion, not necessarily their own. Harris wore a white T-shirt with the words "NATURAL SELECTION" the day of the massacre. They reportedly asked people if they believed in god before they shot them. Circumstantial, though probably solid.

But, again, the whole atheist/ religious folks being violent is about as stale as communion wafers. Violence probably stems from some other place.

Not stale at all. Violence is not the point. The capacity for violence is definitely a human trait, but there is simply no denying the degree of success that has been achieved by using religions to increase hatred and killing.

It is bloody obvious that religions have led to violence, but I propose that might have something to do with how widespread they are as well as the specifics of particular religious ideologies. If religion never came about you would have something else like it that would seem to be the cause of a comparable amount of violence; politics for example. Actually, come to think of it, why do atheists deny the power of a mythical sky god and the misdeeds of his followers but accept the power of government leaders? So you're anti-violence... currently religion is not mandated at gun point in most of the world. The pope doesn't have guided missiles.

What I'm getting at, is that religion being the cause of violence is a moot point. It's ideologies, and that could just as easily be atheism or other secular ideologies, that lead to violence. It's also, historically, survival. Many of your religious wars are actually wars for resources or power with a wash of scripture over them. Kashmir for example.

And this is where religion and politics begin to intertwine...

Both are effective ways of exploiting herd mentalities. Both require leaders who dictate people's opinions of themselves and others. And both encourage shunning of the opposite party or group.

There are plenty of other parallels. Not trying to turn this into a political discussion at any means, but religion and government aren't as separated as people say they are.

I would equate religion and sports with each other more than government.

Organized religion and professional sports serve absolutely no good purpose, but frequently lead to violence and hatred, and always lead to the masses getting fleeced for the benefit of a tiny group of people.

Being spiritual and playing a game of baseball are good fun activities. It's the organization that turns it evil.

Government does have some of those thing in common, but I'm afraid that I have to concede the need for some form of government.

Well, this clears things up. So you're opposed to organized religion as opposed to all religion in any form?

No, I'm not opposed to people having beliefs and living their life based on them in order to make themselves comfortable and happy, and hopefully, in the process, making the world a better place. I wouldn't tell people they are wrong for simply living their life with personal spirituality.

I mean, I wouldn't want anyone telling me what to think about the universe. I have my personal model of spirituality existence, which is constantly undergoing development and refinement.

And I guess that's kind of the point... I wouldn't want anyone telling me what to believe. Nothing good can come from it. If you don't know what to believe for yourself, then you just gotta figure it the fuck out: Don't read it in a book; don't let some robed and repressed misfit tell you; and don't pay them for the privilege.

Of course, I know that religious communities can provide people with immense value and personal pleasure, and participating and contributing to them for the purpose of possibly spreading such joy to others is a difficult thing to find fault with.

Whatevs.
Biggest problem? Ass holes that manipulate believers of any faith.
Second biggest problem? The idiotic things that they believe, which only serves to hold back humanity.
