| Aside from service elevators, freight elevators can be found if not all, but most industrial buildings. Distinct in that the doors slide from the top and bottom. Usually, the freight elevator cabin substitutes walls and ceiling for steel cages in order to see the shaft above and properly align the cart with the floor. Active elevators can be loud and most of them were installed and use equipment from 1920s. Attempting to ride one may be unintuintive as most controls are manual. Depending of age and upgrades performed, a freight elevator may feature the conventional push-button panel where you may just select your desired floor. If not, there is usually a circular lever that you can rotate left/right to go up/down (look at the labels). Also, the extent of rotation controls the speed. Most freight elevators are smooth and require you, as the operator, to level with the floor as close as possible to activate safety switch in order to open the doors. |
