Indoor kitty wants OUT
< on 9/5/2011 4:39 AM >

My kitty, Blair, just turned 7 and has been an indoor cat his whole life. Up until this week, he has been very content to be an indoor cat. Last week he began howling at the door to go out, bolts for the door any time someone opens it, and thanks to my 3 year old son, has managed to escape a few times.

Blair is a Himalayan and is declawed. Every outdoor cat in the neighborhood has become a road pancake or fox and fisher food. Letting him out is NOT an option.

Does anyone know why all of a sudden he wants to go outside? I don't think he is bored as he has plenty of playtime, stimulation, and attention. I also had him fixed when he was 6 months old, so I know he isn't longing for the ladies.

Our cat was the same way. When the weather was nice she wanted out. We finally got tired of fighting to keep her away when we let the dog out, and let her go out. She'd spend the whole day outside and come back at dinner time, often with a mole or mouse for us. She got a baby rabbit once, and a couple of birds, too. On at least one occasion she left us something we couldn't even identify. Luckily she left it on the tile and not on the carpet. (No blood stains)

So, to make a short story long, it may be that he sees animals out there and wants to kill them, though I don't know why he would have just decided now that he's a vicious killer.

There is one way to agree to your cats terms of going outside but is pretty frowned upon.Put a long leash on your cat and tie him up in the backyard where you no he will be safe. The first time you do this you may have to sit with him for awhile so he calms down.I had a cat for 12 years that was indoors and finally she wanted out so i did the leash thing and she loved it.The leash covered the entire backyard so she could roam id check on her here and there and bring her in when she come to the door.

There could be a few reasons he wants out - spring fever, seeing animals, other cats prowling around, maybe he just longs for a little freedom. Plus, even though he may be fixed, he will still be able to smell a female in heat, and react to it. Just as a female can still exhibit the signs of being in heat after she's been fixed.

I agree with letting him outside if you have a yard where he can bounce around for a bit, but if you are going to tether a cat with a tie-out or long leash, make sure he is wearing a HARNESS not a collar. Cats can string themselves up on fences and whatnot when jumping around, so having a harness will make sure he doesn't hang himself.

My cat did the same thing a few years ago, so I took him out. He hated it and wanted back in right away...

Most indoor cats that never go out are agoraphobic.

Mine are...the minute they get out, they want right back in. It's the no walls thing. They're always looking at greener pastures...but they don't know what to do with them when they get them.

It's like if they were to actually catch a mouse...they wouldn't know what the hell to go do with it. I had one indoor cat that actually did...she sat on it and suffocated it to death.

The last 3 indoor cats that went outside, were never seen again. Not hit on the road. Probably eaten by coyotes.
