I havent had any run ins with the cops but not to long ago i was checking out 2 old farm houses on the same property that was right off the highway. there wasnt any No trespassing signs or anything like that so i pulled in got out and started taking some photos. Next thing i know im in the barn and i hear a car honking over in the driveway so i came out as he was pulling off. I waved for him to come back because i didnt want him to just drive off and call the cops. He flipped around and came back. He drove up to me and rolled down his window....first thing i saw was a 30/06 sitting in his front seat. I told him i was just taking pictures of the houses for a photography class and that i wasnt there to mess with anything. I asked him if he wanted me to leave and he said no that if i was just taking pictures then i didnt have to leave and then he just took off. It definitely got my heart pounding but staying calm and just acting like there isnt anything wrong is definitely the best way to go. People no matter who they are pick up on things like that and it can the difference in getting kicked out/ cited or being allowed to stay / getting let go.

Good call hoss. My heart would've been stuck between my teeth. Don't know if I would've had the courage to flag him down! But I'm kinda chicken like that.

well it was a helluva good idea i waved to the guard who saw me on my last trip, turns out the property i was about to head onto had just been purchased by Department of Homeland Security, and they had hired ALOT of ARMED security to patrol the area, guy was friendly but warned me not to even think of heading over to that restricted area. so yea, waving to the people and being polite can certainly pay off -.-

Was caught by the owner of this one place as we were walking out. He drove up to us and stopped us. we explained the UE hobby and that we weren't there to steal shit. After that I said "its actually cool that we ran into you ,sir, I'd love to learn a little bit about the history of this place" he then went on to explain the entire history of the building and how long it had been abandoned and what the previous tenants had done to the property in order for the building to be condemned. The whole time i was sweating bullets, but we shook hands and parted ways. After that i bolted to my Trans am and took off from there as quick as we could in case he decided to call to local cops.

I've been stopped and / or caught by cops countless times, a couple officers here in Denton know me by name just from pulling me out of abandoned buildings. BUT, I've NEVER gotten a citation, and I've never had an unpleasant experience with Denton PD, they're friendly, down to earth guys. Don't be a dick and they won't be a dick. But that's just Denton. Every town is different.

I feel like cops in my town wouldn't be as understanding. But they're also busy doing traffic stops all the time and don't do much of anything else. But I feel like I'd be able to be respectful in any police encounters which I would think goes a long way as long as I'm not being malicious.

I've only been caught once and I could have ran and hidden to avoid it but it was merely a property owner, not a cop, and I was in the middle of nowhere (aka the prairies)
She ended up coming exploring with us. (she had never gone in half the rundown buildings)

Haha, nice.

I haven't been caught yet, but I was exploring an about-to-be demolished stripmall late one evening, and the next day, they put up big "KEEP OUT" signs near the property. I guess some camera or someone saw me!

Yup, had that happen with places I've been in too.

I was at a place recently and got busted. I was really nervous and the cop got it from me that I was on uer.ca. I don't think he even cared. He let me go

...Dumbass... WHY would you ever admit this? Ever? I can't think of a situation where this would be necessary.

This is a rookie forum trap, mind your language ;)

What he meant to say is:

DONT EVER DO THAT AGAIN, EVERRRRR.
Because, you know, admitting you're part of a group of people who are very easy to find online who allegedly break into buildings and trespass and such isn't exactly bright.
Not even because it has anything to do with the website or the security of the people on it, but because you basically just admitted this is a 'hobby' to you, something you do often, which really isn't that bright either :/

Next time, (and there will likely be one,) relax. Take a breath. Try not to mention your source.

He probably didn't know what this was, lucky for you, admitting to be a serial trespasser works real out well with LEO encounters.

Best advice I can give rooks is that its not a lie if you believe it. And cops can tell if you bullshittin.

It took me a long time to figure this out, growing up with a dad who's been a cop my whole life. They can smell bullshit a mile away. You have to really believe what you're saying, and not give it away with body language either. Learn the fine art of looking at someone and lying through your teeth and making them believe every single word of it.
Or tell the truth, but leave out very key components.

Don't change your story. Keep it simple. They will ask you the same question 6 different ways. Don't change your story.

Did I mention don't change your story? Yeah. Don't.

Oh here's an idea!

If all else fails, act retarded. Set this plan up with your friends ahead of time. Arrange it so that they are your caretaker or something. Act like a total retard, and carry a card in your wallet that says something to that effect, along with where you should be taken if found.
"yeah he was supposed to be in school/church/etc but he tends to wander around sometimes, we're glad you found him. He seems to really like old buildings for some reason."

If used properly, and your acting skills are exceptional, you can use this as a repeated excuse over and over.
(this may or may not work, but I can think of a few people who'd be naturals at it)

Most people can't keep eye contact and lie, especially under pressure.

I'm a bluntly honest and open person (to a fault) but I tend to avoid making eye contact with other people (I've got the whole anti-social/aspergers awkwardness thing going on there.)

This works to my advantage with police: lying is against my nature, keeping steady eye contact is also against my nature. You think it would be difficult but when you combine the two it appears perfectly normal.

So lying while keeping eye contact is the easiest thing in the world for me. It is easier for me to keep eye contact while lying than for me to keep eye contact in normal conversation. Throws them for a loop, every-time.

They smell bullshit a mile away, which is why you need to control the amount of information they get, lead them into making assumptions that work in your favor, don't correct them unless absolutely necessary: cops hate being corrected.

It always works in your favor if they think you are up to something worse than what you are doing but through discovery and these assumptions they are left to decide you aren't as bad as they think. If they suspect you are a Scrapper, Tagger, Narcotics Smuggler ... when they discover you are just a harmless trespasser, or better yet, a photographer who was hoping to sneak in and out without making any problems and get some cool shots but unfortunately things didn't go as planned and now you are talking to him... They expect to bust a harmful criminal and then instead realize you're a harmless trespasser ... they are more apt to let you go.

The times getting caught as a pro were so, so much better.
