About 4 months ago I was taking a neighbor friend to Trotter for his first exploring trip since getting his new DSLR. We made it in just fine. Parked across the main road in the neighborhood and walked right in through the fence. We were in for about 25 minutes, when the security people came through with their cart, screaming that they saw us and had called the cops. 10 minutes later, PD showed up. Buddy and I walked right down to them and he flashed his badge. Yes. My friend is a cop. we talked to them for about 15 minutes, and they asked us to take off if we didn't mind please. We told them that we left a camera bag upstairs when they pulled up. They said ok, go grab it and head out when we were done. The security guy just stared at them the whole time, but was cool about the situation.

We went back up to the roof and he took a few more pics, and we left about an hour later.

Security guy waved to us on our way out.

I've actually never been caught exploring any of my locations, knock on wood. I have a tendency to be very careful though. I plan everything. Where is the best place to park, the best place to enter, what areas to avoid so I'm not seen. Everything I plan out because i actually have a clean record I'd rather not mess up. Becoming a firefighter is difficult with a record.

Actually, now thinking about it, I haven't had a cop catch me in a building but one has stopped me heading to a building. It was night and we parked the car and were walking down this dark road to a building. As we are walking a car pulls up next to us, state trooper. He asks what we are doing and we stupidly say "we are just walking around." He looked into the pitch black road and went "Where?" We just repeated we were out for a walk and he told us "just don't go into that building" and drove off.

I actually have a question though I've always been wanting to ask. I know it all depends on how to cop is feeling but what is like the average probability cops will actually arrest you and take you to the station. I've been exploring about 2 years now but since I've never been caught in a building. I've never had the experience of what happens when you actually get caught.

Anyone ever been arrested and done jail time? Not just a citation.

For simple trespassing, they won't do anything more than issuing a citation. It's not an arrestable offense. Now, if there's other things involved, then it's possible (possession of burglary tools, illegal substances, etc.).

There is such thing as "here is your trespassing citation, have a good night guys" type situations here. You will be arrested. Trespassing laws are very different in every state..

Bees. Fucking bees. I hate fucking Bees. I detest bees. Whats better, is walkin the back way to a score, steppin on a bees nest, runnin OUT OF YOUR FUCKING SHOES, tripping, fallin, getting stung on your face AND FUCKING BARE FEET CAUSE ONE FOUND A WAY INTO YOUR GODDAMN SOCK! I mean really? You stung my fuckin foot. And you can't get back at a bee. Its a fucking bee. What can you do to a bee. Nothing, thats what you can do. Not a GODDAMN FUCKING THING. So, now, you don't want to explore. You are a solid mile of woods and rocks and gravel road from your car. You can't find your shoes because the fuckin shoe fairy of the wood must have gotten them, and it wouldn't fit your left foot anymore since its swollen up. So you walk. Barefoot. With one throbbing. With your lip swollen due to a sting, along with the 10 other stings you have. All the way back to your car. A cop is the least of your worries and at that point, you will just knock the shit out of him anyway because maybe, just maybe, he will pull out the gun and put you out of your misery.

So yeah, fuck bees.

Reminded me of this.

I have had several run-ins with the man in the past several years and since we are never causing damage (breaking stuff, tagging etc..) and have no drugs, alcohol or burglary type tools we have been let off with warnings each and every time. I think your attitude while dealing with the cops helps a lot. If you aren't being a dick, they will not usually be a dick. I think most of them realize that we could be out doing a lot worse things than taking pictures.

I've had cops called on me, but luckily I noticed the woman making the report and I may have "forgotten" to warn the group of taggers I encountered. I feel kind of bad for it since they were only painting on one wall that was already covered, but whatever. I got away and they're not my problem.

Not too long ago, me and a friend were trying to get into an abandoned restaurant. Doors were all boarded up but there was a small vent missing on one of the walls, just big enough for a little explorer like myself. My buddy was giving me a boost on his shoulders and there I was, head and shoulders through a tiny hole in the wall, when I heard him say "shit, cops!" Of course, we booked it out of there, thank god he saw the car rolling up before it was too late. One storm drain and a slippery climb up to the road later, we made it back safe and sound (Mostly– my buddy ran into a fence that he didn't see and got a pretty nasty gash.) Still not sure how the cops got wind of us, wondering if the place had silent alarms or hidden cameras.

I'm pretty new to UE, and because of this, I made the mistake of parking right in front of the location I was trying to explore. I thought the area was open to the public, but It turns out that I was actually on private property. I was caught after less than a half hour. luckily for me, someone tore down the "No trespassing" sign and all I had on me was a camera and a tripod. I was only told not to come back, but it still scared the crap out of me nonetheless. For a second, I thought I was about to get arrested.

Never been caught, knock on wood.

Had an instance where a friend of mine and I entered one of those abandoned New England Air Force radar bases on top of a hill. Friend went up to the door of one of the buildings and right as he was about to open it I looked up to the corner of the porch's roof and saw a camera staring down on us.

Might've been nerves, but I swear to God the only reason it caught my eye was because it moved and it started making some wrrr-ing noise zooming in on us. Had full masks, hat and glasses on, wasn't worried about being identified, but catching a trespassing citation on federal property was a much greater fear so we booked it the fuck out of there real quick.

Here's a LONG story:

A small group from my high school class wanted to party, but nobody's house was available. We decided a beach at sunset would be nice, and people started spewing their ideas. My close friend, who I've explored with in the past, told the group that he knew a secret beach (former military RCA tower site on the coast). I'd been there several times, and once encountered some violently protective locals, so I was not overly enthusiastic about the recommendation, but I was overruled by the group who thought the place sounded cool. I had assumed 10-15 kids MAX (many of our 'parties' were just small hangouts where people would drink/smoke).

We headed out for the beach, which was an hour drive. Parking was at the end of a long dirt road, and you had to hop a barbed wire fence and descend a short (20ft) cliff with a rope to get down to the sand. I arrived with my three passengers, trekked out to the beach, and chose a spot to set up.

20 minutes later, a mob of what must have been at least 30 kids clumsily sliding down the cliff. Half were already drunk or high, and they'd brought a full cooler of shitty light brews. Anyway, it was mostly a good time other than the fact that I was continuously battling with the notion that there was no way we were getting out of there unnoticed. It didn't help that I was already high off one of the j's I'd brought with me, which channeled my anxiety into stoned paranoia.

An hour or so later, we began preparing to leave. I had sobered up and at this point was expecting to at least find a ticket on my truck. It was dark, and people were drunkenly packing up their stuff. All was in our bags, and we were headed for the cliff, where we were met by a chubby young officer who was obviously new at the job.

In an excruciatingly cocky and laughable voice, the officer yelled, "Ohhh boy. We're gonna have some unhappy parents tonight! Littering and underage drinking? (we had made a point taking all trash with us; there was no littering) Some serious fines! Anyone age 18+?". Nobody responded, but there were some faint chuckles at his sheer cockiness. He assumed we were all minors, without checking a single ID. We were asked to call our parents so he could talk to them, and so they could come pick us up. My friend handed the cop his phone, with his "mom" on the line (it was just another friend hiding around the corner, calling from her phone).

The officer explained the situation, and demanded that she come pickup her son. In an unnecessarily comedic voice, the friend on the phone said, "F*** no! I ain't driving an hour to pick up that little sh**! Why don't you shove that "Good evening, ma'am" up your a$$? I am releasing him to himself,"(<which is perfectly legal in a scenario with minors like this). She then proceeded to insult him with lines like, "Tell me- how many bribes did you take today?," and, "You're a cop- shouldn't you be off screwing someone's wife?" etc... His dumbfounded and speechless face made it clear that his nasty attitude had been defeated- by a teenage girl, no less.

The group interpreted this as his surrender. After he released the one kid, he was engulfed by a cacophony of kids yelling, giving random excuses, and shoving their phones in his face. Meanwhile, the dd's, including my no longer high self, jumped in their cars and the mob scrambled to join. The baffled officer was at the base of the cliff, struggling to climb up with the thin, frayed rope. We all made it back home safely, the cop not having recorded a single name or license plate. No fines, tickets, charges, or parents contacted. We then, in the heat of our 'victory', held an afterparty at a local park.

One of my favorite high school memories by far! Sorry it's so long- felt like all context was necessary

I've only been kindly advised that I should be careful because there's asbestos and/or I could get hurt, but a) Canada, b) I'm a short, non-threatening-looking white woman. Trespassing in the US makes me nervous. Trespassing in countries where people don't speak English, extra nervous. I'm good at talking my way out of things, but not so good at doing it in Italian/German/Spanish/Mandarin/etc.

The reason I quit Urbex for 5 years was I got a citation. I was fairly new to Urbex and made some dumb mistakes being 17 and all, but I digress. I parked down the road from an abandoned farm house with some buds. By chance, an ex-girlfriend of a bud I was with (in retrospect, probably how he knew the place existed) called the cops on us when we went in. Cops showed up and it was none other than the two cops who came to my school to give a lesson on drug use etc. They said there had been problems in the past with this property and called the owner to decide our fate. Walked away with a fat 350 dollar ticket. Ended up doing 20 hours community service. Haven't been Urbexing since, despite the ticket now being off my record.

Moral is, don't be an idiot I guess. When I end up going out again I'll be careful to park far away and make sure there's no vindictive ex-girlfriends across the street

Not police, but private security. Unmarked car with blacked out windows behind the place ; I literally peered through its windows and still didn't see him, somehow. We enter, and about twenty seconds later I hear the door open behind us again. We keep walking, he jogs to catch up to us, and at that point we figured it wasn't worth running away. He asked our business, checked my bag (it only had a flashlights and McDonald's coupons), and told us basically to take a quick walk around to get it out of our system then leave and never return.

I guess once he saw we weren't there for drugs, arson, or a combination of the two, it would be best just to let us go.

Still thankful about that, but not sure I'd have been treated quite so leniently if I was older at the time.

Haven't had any run ins with any police or security as of yet, but the first UE I did, a construction crew showed up about 5 minutes in, so I had to book it out of there pretty quickly.
