24-105 f4L vs 24-70 f2.8L

I'm wanting to upgrade the 28-135 that came with my 7D.

Anyone have them both or use both back to back? I have a Canon 10-22 and 70-200 and what ever I get has to fill the gap between them. Is there any others I should consider I don't want to be missing much from that range but I don't mind so much if they overlap. Any real world input would be great I've used them both in the camera store, but can't make up my mind.

The 24-105 is a better deal if you don't need the extra stop and supposedly has more consistent quality control than the 24-70.

Do you really need a zoom? Two primes would be sufficient when paired with your other lenses. 22mm vs 24mm on crop is negligible (and no one makes a good mid-range 24mm) so I'd just jump into a 28mm\30mm and a 50mm\60mm would cover all the bases. $400 primes are sharper and produce better images than L zooms.

EF 28mm F/1.8 USM, EF 50mm F/1.8 USM, EF-S 60mm F/2.8.

I also really like the EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, 85mm is my favorite focal length on crop for portraits/nature.

Because you have micro-adjust in the 7D you should also consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 which have shown to be sharper than the Canon equivalents but need MA to get the full effects of it.

I do want a zoom I know the primes will have better image quality, but the zoom wins when it comes to weddings and action that I need to catch.

I do plan on an 85mm prime in the near future I like that length too. If I shot strictly UE and portraits I would probably just get primes but there is too many times when they just are not flexible enough to catch things on the move.

I already have the nifty 50 would like to step up to the 1.4 and get a 28-30 something prime.

From what I've been reading, it's going to be a completely redesigned optical design and it does not look like it will have IS.. some say image stabilization actually may have a negative effect on image quality at times.

Buy it now, sell it for slightly less later and upgrade. The price won't drop more than a hundred or two even after the mk II's come out.

This might happen, but the probability of a 24-70mm replacement is far more solid at this point.
