What lens is on your camera the most?
< on 1/28/2011 11:07 PM >

Just like the title states what lens do you find yourself using the most.

For me it's a toss up between my 70-200 2.8L or my Canon 10-22

The 10-22 is almost always on for UE and the 70-200 for anything portrait or action related.

Either the Tokina AT-X Pro 17mm f/3.5 or the Nikon 28mm f/2.8 Ai-S, the latter is almost "50" sharp.

Tokina 35mm is the only daily carry lens I have with me, mostly used to take pictures of the homework problems in other people's textbooks because I refuse to pay $180 for a textbook.

Sigma 10-20mm is the best general purpose UE lens.
Samyang 8mm is used when I need to photograph something BIG.

Lenses I hardly ever use anymore: 18-55 kit, 70-210mm, 50mm f/1.8, 24-85mm.

How do you like the tokina? I would like a prime closer to 50mm on a crop body. I like my cheap canon 50 outside but I don't like it indoors for portraits can't get far enough away sometimes.

Also how do you like your fisheye? I've always wanted a fish but not canon's 15mm on a crop body and definitely not for $600+ dollars.

Do they make that Tokina 17mm in Canon mount? What's your take on it? Sharpness contrast? From everything I've read the canon 20mm prime is a bit of a turd.

I love my fisheye, and I'd probably buy the 8-16mm L if I could afford it. I've come to realize that none of the cheap wide angles are sharp. The 10-20mm is soft even in perfect focus. The Samyang is soft even in perfect focus too.
I probably should have went with the Tokina 11-16mm. I just don't think I'll find cheap glass I'm happy with.

Fisheye 8mm:
pro:
Pro-optic variant at Adorama is the cheapest available $279.99
Color rendition is EXCELLENT. My 10-20 is always undersaturated the 8mm is very color rich and vibrant.
cons:
minimum focusing distance 1 ft
manual focus only and no AF confirmation
EF-S digital only (petals get in way on 35mm unless you forcibly remove the hood).
Meh:
build quality
exposed element (it's unavoidable)
sharpness

Tokina 35mm:
Pro:
Price $279.99 adorama/bhphotovideo
Very Sharp even at f/2.8
Very nice color rendition
1:1 macro (meaning it can focus on something directly in front of the lens (flash/tripod required for exposure))
very easy to manual focus
size/weight
cons
autofocus blows on a rebel (not as bad as the 50/1.8) with a 7D it'd be better (I couldn't get focus confirmation on my EOS-3 but the 3 spun the focus ring about three times as fast as the rebel ... i.e. the rebel just sucks at focusing).
EF-S digtal only -- crazy outta focus on film camera.
barrel distortion (though less than competing models)
Meh:
35mm on Canon APS-C = 56mm (compare to 52.5mm on Nikon)
build quality (again better than cheap canons)
It looks stupid with a filter(I thinl).

The Tokina AT-X Pro 17mm f/3.5 was made in both Canon and Nikon mounts (it was discontinued in 2005). Center sharpness is decent but not spectacular and corner sharpness follows closely behind the center. In other words, sharpness is relatively consistent across the frame on APS-C. Full-frame will probably be a bit different, though. Contrast is pretty decent. It doesn't flare easily but ghosting can be an issue when pointed towards the sun (this is a typical issue with ultra-wide lenses).

Compared to the EF 20mm f/2.8, it's less sharp in the center but a little better in the corners. Seeing as it's a 90s Tokina, it's built like a 90s pro-grade Nikkor tank. They can be had for around $300, I found mine with its hood and caps for $250.

First of all, Canon is really fucking up BIG TIME with manufacturing problems associated with a new plant, delaying the delivery of the 8-15 f/4L and every other lens that was released just recently.

Second: Sigma... Samyang... I think you may have actually gotten a bad sample of both lenses.

I ALWAYS use my Sigma 10-20... its on my camera about 90% of the time...
however, I have recently started using my 50mm a bit more..

also, I think my 10-20 is a pretty sharp.. no complaints.
ALL of these were shot with it.. even the "fisheye" but that was done it photoshop

Yeah I went rounds and rounds with that problem before I bought my canon 10-22. My local store had a tokina 11-16 I shot both back to back and didn't find that particular copy to be any sharper than the Canon, but it was sharp. I plan on swapping out my kit 28-135 with a 24-105L or 24-70L when my tax refund gets here.

I like the idea of only missing 1 mm in my zoom collection so I went with the Canon instead of the tokina. I just wish it would have had a constant aperture like the 11-16.

I dunno. There has actually been inconsistency in the results of my lenses. Yeah I damaged the 10-20mm. I looked back over some old stuff and newer stuff and it looks good. But I might have figured it out. I can't shoot above f/8 with the 10-20mm. Everything I have shot at f/11 is shit. Same deal with the fisheye f/5.6 is actually sharper than f/8 (in the center) but f/8 is worth it for the improved DOF.

So is f/8 is the Diffraction limit of the lenses or the camera? Is it possible the 8.1MP 350D does not have the resolution to see what the lenses are capable of?

Really, the diffraction-related sharpness drop-off with lenses is a case-by-case thing. Some lenses, like my 28mm f/2.8 Ai-S, are diffraction-limited by f/5.6 and sharpness only drops off from there (albeit at a slight rate); other lenses will hold decent levels of sharpness stopped all the way down (e.g. Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-D). With almost all macro lenses, the sharpness drops off severely past f/11 on APS-C and full-frame.

Again, the severity of the diffraction drop-off varies from lens to lens.
