Steel Wool spinning

Get steel wool - really fine wool - and burn it while spinning it quickly. You want to hold it in something that won't burn. Nylon string is the worst, cotton works ok, but metal wires or chains (coathanger wire, light chain) are rather good.

I use a carabiner on chain to hold the steel wool. A coathanger can be bent to hold it. The end with the steel wool gets very hot, don't touch it too soon to put more wool on. The bits of metal flying off are also hot, wear a hat.

A lighter or a 9v battery will light the steel wool. Spin it in different patterns (overhead, etc) for effect.

That's how small the #0000 steel wool is. Here's a whole pad of it

There are easy and hard ways to hold the steel wool. If you hold it in your hands, light one end and spin it - but don't hold on too long! You can straighten a metal coathanger and fold the end over to make a hook. I use a carabiner.

It's just snagged in the gate of the clip.

You need at least a short section of something fireproof. A few inches of chain and then whatever string is convenient works fine.

I'm jealous you can get that in pads - around here, the only non-soaped steel wool I found was in continuous rolls, which meant tearing it apart by hand, which is not a great deal of fun.

Scissors. It's bad for the scissors, but it's worth it. Where do you find it in rolls, hardware stores?

These plats (and the matching teacups) are fireproof as long as you don't drop hot ones in water >.<

Be sure not to compact the steel wool much, it needs air penetration in order to burn.

Here in the states, unless it's delicious and piping hot in only three microwave minutes, we don't buy it.

But anyway, I only had to buy the steel wool, everything else I had in my garage. This is my ghetto rig.

And these were the results

I'm still trying to figure out how to set up my camera so this looks best.

Have you ever tried soaking it in kero? Are there any differences in the result?

You get a stronger blaze where the steel wool is, and it throws sparks.
