Cheap Bikes
< on 2/14/2010 3:10 AM >

Whats the cheapest motorcycle youve ever bought? Was it worth it?

Im thinking about grabbing this, the guys got no interest so far so I might be able to get it for $550. Im in the middle of parting out my K75 and in the process of finding a 1994 Honda CB1000 (rare naked bike) and need a beater... any thoughts on the XJ550? Ive heard theyre pretty indestructable

If you are not mechanically inclined hire a mechanic to check it out first. Help save you $$$ later. One of the best bike I ever owned I picked up on CL for $100. It was a 80 or 82(I forget) GS450(Suzuki) Had 8k when I got it. Other then putting new Orings in the carbs I never touched it. Had 40K when I sold it for $500. Still ran great. Lasted me 10-12 years.

Id need to get it inspected to go between states, so I plan on that.

Good to hear about the GS450, I'm familiar with the GS850 and assume theyre pretty similar.

A friend got a Yamaha FZ700 for $500 on craigslist. Best bike he ever bought, he claims... I beg to differ, but Ive been on it and it is a pretty quick bike

My '85 XL350 only cost me $200. Ugly, but runs perfect. Between my brother and I, we've had it since '98.

Right now I have a TW200 that lost the intake valve, so I'm rebuilding the engine. That one was given to me, but I have about $130 in parts in it.

The other two bikes were not cheap. Well, they were both over $2k anyway.

I don't know much about xj's, but I'd say $550 for anything that runs well and is road ready is a deal. Good tires are a bonus...

My first bike. 1977 Kawasaki KZ400. Dude had welded on a giant luggage rack, had a suicidal locking ``cruise control``, an equally suicidal sissy bar that was about 3' tall and you could adjust it right up to lock you in and a massive highway peg/rollbar assembly. Giant underpowered wealth of goodness.

$400 with safety.

I loved that bike. Stupid me traded it for a leather jacket and some stereo equipment after I bought a new(er) bike.

It was ... 1984 or so ... what the heck did I know? I blame Orwell.

LOL I think an old guy is going to win this one!

Bought a 1974 Penton 250 Jackpiner in 1981, running but not pretty for $75.00 Own it to this day. Worth a good bit more than that I assure you

Yup! Old guys rule....... I traded a Renault LeCar, for a Honda MR50, and an XR80. Played with them for a few years, till a workmate mentioned he had an old BSA motocross bike sitting next to his garage for the last 20 years.

I traded the two running hondas for a sight unseen outside stored BSA Victor.

Turns out that this bike was stored very very well, and is an ex Works Factory racer. one of 6 made for the 1968 GP circuit.

It's history is documented, it was ridden by John Banks. I've owned it now for 23 years. My guess is that it's worth more than the two little Hondas I traded for it.

I have a '74 KZ400 sitting in my barn. Got it running, and now it sits.

I think I traded a Pinto for that Renault. I still miss those two Hondas, they were a blast on the mini motocross track we built in the yard........1.

thats insanely cool and Im insanely jealous

not only is it located in your backyard but it looks like nice sandy loam to boot

we had to find vacant lots and ride on hard packed Texas clay, sprinkled with a little loose dust to make it interesting

(no wonder Im such a crappy rider I had a deprived childhood and didnt even know it)

edit: I bet passing was a bitch on that track!

I remember passing as being very tough. Come to think of it these were our third generation back yard bikes pictured here. I don't think any of us spent more than $500 or so.

It was worth every penny. And it was perfect loam, we'd groom that stupid track like a baseball field.

That cinder block wall pissed a few people off. The guy on the red bike is a retired pro racer. I've never ventured past expert level, needless to say I was always eating his dust. so things could get spirited between us two old guys.

One day he was trying to wheelie all the way around, wish I'd gotten pictures of his attempts. They were very entertaining, it was a tight track so he never quite made it all the way.

On this particular day, he hit the wall and twisted his foot 180, thus shattering lower leg like a candy cane.

apparently this hurts very bad? And costs a lot of money?

His wife had us flatten the track for fear of neighbor kids gettin' hurt on their bicycles.

Here is a first gen track, at another neighbors house. The pits between the jumps were as deep as the jumps were tall. This track was more scary then it was fun......It was flattened also..
