1000 Dollar Kitten
< on 11/6/2008 3:12 AM >

My Boss is a bit eccentric (his parents are loooooaaaaded)
He owns a $90,000 Aftermarket Lancer Evo (he races)

and just purchased a Persian Kitten Which he paid over 1000 Dollars for (he wouldn't tell me the EXACT amount) but said it was over triple the price of his $300 Miniature Doberman Puppy.

But the question I had was: If you had a spare grand would you spend it on this:

HELL NO. That's caaarrrraaazzzzyyyy. If I had that much money, I would buy one of those hypo-allergenic cats instead.

But, who wants to spend $1000 on a "pussy" like that? I bet there are better ones out there........*wink*

I think it's a shame that he feels the need to own a status symbol cat, rather than a perfectly good rescue kitten.

I've already decided that if I ever buy a purebred cat, it's gonna be a Scottish Fold....they're SUPER adorable and full of personality. But I would never, ever spend a grand on a dog or cat; not only do I not have that kind of money, but there are plenty of breeders out there who do it for the love of the breed rather than as a source of income/way to take advantage of people. I hate that cats are now being bred like all the -poo and "teacup" dogs as "designer breeds;" total crap.

Not to mention I've already had a Persian and it's a LOT of work to care for those coats.

Amen to that! Same for dogs. Poppy's a rescue and we have no regrets giving her a home.

Even when she's being a little bugger.

people like that piss me the fuck off...
I bet he doesn't even care about the cat really or about taking care of it..

I will never ever pay that much money for a pet. I obtain my pets through animal shelters or by rescuing them from being abandoned in my area. For every cat/dog bought from a pet shop, puppy mill, and breeder, many pets die in the shelters.... support your local animal shelter/humane society people!

NO THX.

but if i had an extra $3000 i'd prolly get a savannah. it's a mix of a house cat and african serval, looks like a cheetah. they get about 50% - 75% bigger than a normal cat and love water. they act more like dogs.

one of these got loose and was running around campus earlier this year that most people mistook for a cougar. we got about 15 e-mails sent campus-wide about "a cougar running loose on campus." we kept waiting for the update that they had caught demi moore but it never materialized and then they just realized it was a savannah cat.

^^ just cuz.

Well, if I wanted it, yes....however Persians have some major breathing problems and not to mention the hair...ugh!

But honestly, for a purebred anything, it's not that expensive. Most times when you go to a private breeder you pay about that for AKC anything (dogs)....

I tend to be more of a "rescue pet" person myself. Local animal shelter or rescuing dumped/stray animals has always kept me in a good supply of four-footed companions.

People mistake normal-sized house cats for cougars. I guess it is not surprising that something more exotic-looking gets mistaken for one, especially by people who have never seen the genuine article (and Demi Moore doesn't count although she fits one definition of the term).

I have two cats that cost about that.

You pay for the breed. It's not a status symbol to us, we paid for Maine Coons because of the reputation of the breed.

They're docile, they love kids, as well as people in general and can be playful, but for the most part, they're fat and lazy.

What I paid for were two fat lazy shag rugs that eat me out of house and home that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

If something happened to them...I'd have to adopt from the shelter as Sammy and Sally were bought during better times when I had money to burn. I couldn't afford them now if I wanted to.

my maine coon just showed up at my door free of charge. and then stole all my beer.

and my xbox controller.

i did have to pay $OMG to get her checked up at the vet to make sure she was OK.

She looks like my dearly departed cat Meadow...

I was thinking about her today. I miss her. She left us too soon due to the breeder's neglect.

My cat Jazzy was a Maine Coon, or maybe half. Not sure. We got him from the animal shelter, no more expensive than any other adoption. He was a great cat. He was very old when he passed away.

Our maine coon was a "found" cat and we were the only people willing to take him. Sadly he passed away due to heart disease last year. He was about 10.

He looks like my Sammy. Just like him.

Miss Meadow had a rare genetic disorder, she was allergic to her own dental plaque and the breeder didn't bother to take care of her. By the time we got her, it was too late, it had caused malignant lesions that spread to her brain. We had her teeth pulled and our vet thought she had it licked, since Meadow was eating very well and felt so much better for a while afterwards, but she began getting sicker and sicker over the next few months. She couldn't take care of herself, we had to have her shaved to a summer coat and for a while, she was great. Until Halloween of that year, when she had a stroke from a lesion in her brain and she passed away a few hours afterwards.

It could have been stopped by just brushing her teeth once or twice a week, that's all it would have taken.

I wish we could have gotten her sooner, she was barely three years old.
