Entry: District Heating & Cooling
originally posted by MacGyver

A term used to describe a centralized heating and/or cooling facility that services multiple buildings. Many places use district heating. Common examples are hospitals, college/university campuses, asylums, industrial campuses, and some downtown metro areas.

Heating is most commonly distributed by means of high pressure, high temperature steam that is piped through tunnels. Cooling is usually distributed in the form of chilled water loops run in pipes and tunnels.

These utility tunnels can often times be accessed through the basements of the buildings they service, or possibly through manhole covers located about the area.
