| PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are petroleum-based chemicals used as coolant in electrical transformers. They are highly carcinogenic (cancer causing) and can commonly be found in abandoned industrial facilities, stored in metal drums. They can enter the body via ingestion, inhalation, and most commonly by absorption through the skin. Their effects are long-term. They may be found in the ground around many old factories as they were commonly poured on the ground as weed control and as a means of disposal before their dangers were well-known. Clarification: Older pole and substation transformers will usually be black or some other color than GREY. Modern Transformers (post 1980) will be light GREY with a blue tag stating "NON-PCB" content near the bottom/ the drain valve. Modern transformers are filled with mineral oil (not too much different than Baby Oil). PCBs did have superior insulating properties, but their carcenogenic effects made them more harmful than beneficial, thus the legislation in the U.S. against the chemical. -Additional info added by Twystr- |
