Who takes a giant pack with them? Who takes no pack?
I'm interested. I have a fairly large backpack (5.11 72 Tactical Rush). It holds everything I want to use (camera, GPS, various knives, tools, spray, bandaids, whatever) but has room for me to always have my mask, rope, and water, along with poncho/handwarmers, maps, whatever. It's so freakin organized.
But - I am sure it's not going to fit in harder to access areas, and it's going to look conspicuous. What does everyone else make sure they bring into a location if they can't take a pack? Just a camera? What ends up being too useful to leave behind?

I try not to take a pack. Just a camera strapped to me.
That said, I have a knife clipped to my belt, and a cigarette case full of b&e tools in my pocket (slippers, picks, such), and a mini-maglight in the other pocket.
Occasionally I will take a small backpack with me, in which case I'll always throw in some rope. Other than that it's location-specific. Oh, and gloves. Good gloves are too important to leave behind.

Depends on the explore, if I am walking to the site or plan/think I am going to spend any amount of time there I always take my bullet bag. If it is a spontaneous explore or a recon just to check out a site I found my EDC is more than enough.
Contents of bag:
- integral 3 liter camelbak w/gatoraid climbing kit: - 50' dynamic rope - 2 locking gate biners - descender - quick link strap - riggers belt - my climbing shoes
- munchies, normally granola bars - tp in a ziplock - multi tool - 3 flashlighs and spares bag (bulbs, batts etc) - map of area if I have one - camera (extra stuff in my spares bag) - first aid kit (fak) - phone, charged - custom tool ring (other thread around here someplace) - jiggler lockpick and tension wrench under the insole of my left shoe (no one ever asks you to take off your shoes)

Wow is all that stuff really necessary? I have been UEing regularly for 10 years, I have rarely come across a situation where I needed any thing more then I carry. Which is,
backpack style camera bag with: -Leatherman multitool, -water, -flash light, -small first aid kit, -camera, -2-3 lenses, speed light, tripod all chosen depending on time and location.
everything else I normally have on me: -keys, money, lighter, Cel phone and wallet.
