A device used to extract gold-bearing sand or sediment from a body of water. Large factory dredges were used worldwide in the late 1800s and early 20th century, and some are still in use today despite their high cost and relative inefficiency. Abandoned gold dredges can be found throughout northwestern Canada, Alaska, and some areas of California, Oregon, and Washington.

Dredges operate by scooping up sand and gravel from the bottom of a pond or other water body, sifting the material through a washing and sluicing system to remove the heavier gold particles, and depositing the sifted dirt out the other end as tailings. In loose soil, dredges can move themselves forward by extracting dirt from the front of the pond while depositing the leftovers at the back, thus moving both the dredge and the pond. Modern dredges are small portable machines that can be operated by one or two people. Another type of dredge is that used to remove sediment from a harbor or shipping channel in order to increase the depth.

other dredges , as in the bruxelles, general brock and the manseau 101 are used for channel deepening. They can be , as is the bruxelles, bucket ladder ie a large conveyor belt. The can also be , as in the general brock, hydraulic- a large pump used to pump silt ashore and finally the manseau 101 a dipper dredge used to simply dig the channel. the 3 above mentioned ones are owned by MIL davie and are used in maintenance of the seaway in the montreal section.
