Entry: Light Painting

Also referred to as flashlight painting. It is the act of using a light source to "paint" an object for a photograph. This is normally achieved by opening the camera's shutter for a fairly long period of time, then shinning the light on an object that photographer wishes to highlight. While the shutter is open the "painter" moves the light in such a manner to give the subject even illumination. Often the photograph uses gel on the flashlight to give the object color, and thus further increasing the power of the photograph. Light painting can also be used in combination with a gelled flash.
