haha, the random references and instults about me humor me! Hehe..

Oh well.. Really, doesnt matter to me. Very interesting new updates and thanks for the pictures!

You guys want adventure? just wait till I drive ther im gonna call all of you and will see who is the brave and meets up with me hehe

What do you people think is behind these sealed up arches and doors?

Lets think, if its sealed, means it was once open. Yeah I know this is very obvious but we should write it down to get the basics and then try to figure out other theories.

So,

If the window or arch used to be open, it means ther used to be some entrance, door, or pathway or view, to have a use for the once opend holes.

Potentially, behind these closed holes ther is

A. entrance
B. Window
C. doorway
D. nothing/filled in

Now, why are they sealed up?

If so many around the city are sealed up, owned by private individuals, its not really possible they were all sealed to remain secret. So that is out.

The most logical reason is safety or even the city said they arent safe to hide them. or some or all are actually unsafe tunnels.

Hmm.

if they are not safe, its possible because they network to other locations and or are long tunnels.

Now if the city denies any tunnels, so we heard, who contracted to seal up all or most of these entrances/windows?

Hhm, weird stuff, Victoria dig more into this give me some leads!

done what? called kubla a doorknob? indeed I did (or the photo did?). I'm sure our mr. meggaman here was only poking fun about fan tan alley. Besides, my comment was just a friendly elbow in the ribs... no serious offense taken I hope.

None taken at all. Though I'd probably feel better about it if you actually posted something that contributed to the thread rather than start by taking the piss out of me.

Perhaps you can go by the city archives and do some reading to define what is behind those sealed passageways. That would be a lot easier than drilling test holes. And the more research you do the easier it will become because you will find conclusions to rumors that you only can imagine right now. If you know how to read blueprints you will be finding a lot of sweet stuff.
Good Luck

Well I don't post here often as I usually don't have anything to add, but I stumbled upon these pictures a little while ago while researching the city. I'm sure some of you have already found them, but if you have not, well then here they are. I figured they might be of some help for The Thing of the Doorstep as long as his building was constructed before the 1880's.

I'm not sure of the store's whereabouts , so there are a bunch of them.

Great maps! I wish I could read the finer print though. Where did you find these?

Or they were covered over and backfilled....

Regardless of what is going on there, personally, if I owned a business with a tantalizing thing like that in the basement, I would be cutting into it too.

They are indeed fire insurance maps, which date back to 1885 I believe. I'm relativly new to historical maps, are fire insurance maps quite commonplace in Victoria?

That's a turntable for trains... not some uber-secret passage that was used by Chinese labourers to smuggle ultra-secret nuclear weapons.

So anyway, I went yesterday evening to investigate The Thing on the Doorstep's alleged tunnel entrance. We took some pictures and I'll include two of them here. The entrance/doorway is about 8 feet high and has an arched top made out of brick. We think it is far too large an entrance to be any sort of "coal chute". The concrete seems like it was done within the last 50 years and is very solid. The Thing on the Doorstep also had some photo's in a book from as far back as roughly 1900 showing his building with the street at its current height. We decided that we should drill some test holes in the concrete to see if it is in fact hollow on the other side. It may be a few days before we do this initial test. More to come!

Borrowing from Gorbalskorp's contribution here...

[see: detail # 3]

...take a close look at this detail. The spaces indicated that extend beyond the building's foundation are spaces that were used as additional storage. They were part of the building, and part of the property on which the building stood.

Most of these spaces were filled in and sealed 40-50 years ago, when the city decided to bury power lines.

The main level of Market Square has many retail spaces that have these features at their back wall, and appear to cover something that extends INTO Pandora/Johnson St respectively.

Some of these spaces are as they were before the city condemned them, and are open and vacant. Most are not.

They MAY be connected via a long corridor that runs up Pandora/Johnson St.

And I just got off the phone with a woman who works closely with Victoria's homeless community, and she's going to show me the tunnel (pay attention here, Jester) where these people...mostly men...find shelter.
