An FMC stands for a Fake Manhole Cover.

This is only really useful when exploring underneath large usually heavy manholes.
The intended purpose is to use the temporary manhole while you are exploring the tunnel to make for an easier exit from underneath. You must consider the load bearing strength when dealing with lids that are in the street.

I built the pictured 32” cover to temporarily replace a manhole that weighed at least 200 lbs. The lid was not in the street, so I could get away with using some scrap 2 x 4’s. I added a handle to simplify carrying and used an eyehook with a short length of rope to tie to a ladder rung as a make shift lock. Of course I painted everything flat black after constructing it to detract any attention to the fact that it was not a real manhole cover.

After the first time I put it to use, we startled some other explores who pointed out a 30 lb. Square lid that led to the same location. I felt stupid for investing the time, but hope to get another chance to use the 32” fake lid.

On a side note, an aluminum lid could be constructed to temporarily replace lids that are located in the street, but they would be costly.
