Listening to music
< on 10/5/2023 5:12 AM >

I often find that music helps me relax and I just enjoy listening to it. However, I am not sure how alert of my surroundings I should be. Is it okay to listen to some tunes or should I be as aware and cautious as I can?

You definitely should be alert to your surroundings whenever exploring.

The only time I listen to music while exploring is when walking a long distance, and I know I won't run into anybody, and I know nobody will overhear if I'm listening on a speaker, and I know where I'm going. This might mean walking across a large field or through a tunnel, and usually it's after the hard part's done or on the way back.

I also love to listen to music, but I never do while urban exploring. It’s important to listen for all sorts of sounds, as it could save your life and keep you from getting caught. For example, I once went into this old college in an abandoned strip mall, and I accidentally triggered a motion censor alarm. It was barely audible, and I 100% wouldn’t have heard it if I even had the slightest bit of music playing.

My friend and I recently checked out a super long tunnel that runs underground. Very creepy with random noises coming out of nowhere. We blasted Metallica to help ease our nerves, although maybe "Enter Sandman" was maybe too meta-ironic of a choice.

Above ground, definitely keep it quiet to stay aware of your surroundings. But far underground in a sewer or drain? Go nuts, there's nothing like loudly singing off-key to your favorite folk punk song while splashing through a drain.

Never. Unless you’re maybe somewhere legally or getting caught is basically impossible. Should always be aware of your surroundings. Has saved me several times from different issues.

I wouldn't necessarily say listening to music while exploring is a bad thing, unless you're out in the open then that would be a great time to probably be at you're 100% full attention for anything going on around you (which sucks in my opinion since music is great to calm the nerves) the one time I did end up listening to music while exploring an abandoned lumber facility near the stockyards on St Clair in Toronto , it didn't really end well at all because we ended up alerting someone near by, in the end we got out safely but the lesson learned that day was probably not to let the people around me blast Sticker by NCT127 on a speaker ever again.

Definitely not a safe idea. Will it help ease your anxiety? Maybe. Will it help with your physical safety? Definitely not.

I usually use one airpod so that I can hear my surroundings from one ear while still listening to my music. How bad an idea would that be to do while urbexing? I assume still not advisable as you wouldn't have full and complete hearing of your surroundings?
