Century Old Marble Quarry - West Kootenay
< on 10/30/2020 12:48 AM >

This one is a pretty popular spot in the Kootenays, I only learned of it recently just before embarking on a ~4300 km road trip to Saskatchewan. This quarry was such a big deal when it opened in 1909 that they named the area after it. It doesn't really matter which direction you approach Marblehead from, it's going to be awesome. 31 south along Kootenay Lake is incredible, 31A over to New Denver is incredible, 31 north to Trout Lake is incredible, can't go wrong in the West Kootenays.

The quarry ceased operations in the late 30s and has since existed as a popular party spot and photo op. Besides the scale of the place there isn't much to see inside, however, it is always fun to drive around inside of a mountain. Track it down next time you're out and about in the Koots.

Stone from Marblehead lives on in one of Canada's most impressive structures, the Cardston Alberta Temple:

Awesome shots! Love all the shots with your jeep! I just might have to drive all the way out there one day, if my old truck can make it!

Woah that's cool!

Heckin' mormons....

Watch the sharpness on your photos, not sure if you added it in post or it's just that way from your camera, but sometimes it's a little hard to tell if looking at rust, rock, spraypaint or camera noise. haha

Specifically in the photo behind(?) all the gears(?)

Yeah still working on a decent strategy for low light shots. I'm still shooting with a Pixel 2 and usually post process everything on the go with Photoshop Express. The noisey cross hatching artifacts are mostly from jacking up the shadows in dark shots. The "night sight" long exposure feature on the Pixels actually works really well relative to most other phones but it's still a camera phone and I've still gotta aggressively post process every photo to get the levels/exposure sorted.

I'll be posting another set of dark-ish early morning shots from another location tomorrow, I think they turned out a bit better than these ones.
