Posted by Aran It doesn't sound organic whatever it was. I would almost say low flying airliner if it weren't for the abrubt stop at the end. There's almost a mechanical drone underneath the main scrapping sound that cuts off right at the same time. Without knowing more about the site it's hard to tell, but to me it sounds like perhaps an automated vent from an HVAC system or something stuck half open (hence the weird whistling) and then some sensor starts up some machinery to close it (the drone and scrapping sound). Granted, I know nothing about HVAC systems so I might be way off base there. |
Posted by Dee Ashley 1. If it was a windy day, that would be my first guess. Wind can make some really bizarre (and often startling) noises in abandonments. Usually if I can find the source of the noise, it’s something hanging or loosened that each gust of wind is dragging, scraping, or banging into something else. |

2. Scrappers. More than once, I’ve been unaware of someone else in the building until I heard them sawing, banging, or dragging things from distant parts of the building via the pipes and ducts. The noise travels effectively and scrappers are incredibly loud. |
Posted by Radio2600 Sounds like a sump pump. Check the basement. |
Just wondering what you guys might think it is. |
