Weird Noise: Wondering if anyone has any ideas what it is.
< on 5/19/2020 9:11 PM >

Ok, so on my most recent exploring trip, The Decay Archives and I heard this growling noise. It freaked us out, because obviously when you're in an abandoned building normally it is silent or you hear little scurries of animals or stuff like this. Normally it wouldn't bother me, but this was really loud, and at random intervals it would start and then stop. Here's what it sounded like:

https://drive.goog...s/view?usp=sharing

By the end of the explore, we determined it was the loudest when we were in front of one of the vents, but despite this we decided not to go into either the basement or the 2nd floor on our trip.

Just wondering what you guys might think it is.
Thanks
-Bygone Era

Looks like the google drive link you shared is restricted, I'm not able to view the file. Make sure you have "Anyone with the link can view" selected.

It should work now, now you should be able to view it

It doesn't sound organic whatever it was. I would almost say low flying airliner if it weren't for the abrubt stop at the end. There's almost a mechanical drone underneath the main scrapping sound that cuts off right at the same time. Without knowing more about the site it's hard to tell, but to me it sounds like perhaps an automated vent from an HVAC system or something stuck half open (hence the weird whistling) and then some sensor starts up some machinery to close it (the drone and scrapping sound). Granted, I know nothing about HVAC systems so I might be way off base there.

Hmm pretty funky. I agree, I think some more information about the site would be helpful. I'd suspect wind coming in through an open vent/hole in the side, those sounds can get pretty distorted coming through long ventilation systems and it would explain the random intervals. I didn't hear anything in this clip that sounded like a "growl"

The Building is a office for a large complex of buildings. Its dates back to the 1950's but it seems to have been continually updated and worked on into the late 1990's to early 2000's. As far as I know, other than a security office at the entrance to the Complex that continued to be used until 2017, the rest of the buildings were cut from the power grid in around 2007. That's my understanding of the place

I also know very little about HVAC but I second this guess. Did you/can you go to the roof? This could truly be yet another case of "just the wind".

1. If it was a windy day, that would be my first guess. Wind can make some really bizarre (and often startling) noises in abandonments. Usually if I can find the source of the noise, it’s something hanging or loosened that each gust of wind is dragging, scraping, or banging into something else.

2. Scrappers. More than once, I’ve been unaware of someone else in the building until I heard them sawing, banging, or dragging things from distant parts of the building via the pipes and ducts. The noise travels effectively and scrappers are incredibly loud.

3. It could be a wormhole.

Sounds like a sump pump.

Check the basement.

This sounds right, as it would explain why it would start up, continue for a while, then go away again at random intervals. I don't remember there being too much wind that day though so I'm wondering. Still sounds like the most plausible reason to me though.

3. It could be a wormhole.

Definitely a plausible option

Maybe, I'd be surprised though. While the buildings are well hidden or at least somewhat camouflaged from the roads around it, it is surrounded on all sides by either major roads or housing developments. I had to use a bike to get to the site, but honestly, with this whole crisis thing happening, anything is possible.

Honestly, I was most worried about another living thing, so if it is still there the next time I go, it definitely means that it wasn't caused by someone or an animal, which would be a big relief for me. I would be surprised if it is a sump pump because due to the size of the building, I would think they would have a large on-site crew to oversee it or at least one person since these buildings have seen their fair share of tagging and other such vandalism. Who knows though?

Finally put up a post for my trip here so check it out if you want: http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=131939
I definitely need to go back and check this place out.
I'll post when I end up doing it.

Many roof units have a vent to blend in outside air. So, it's not uncommon to hear traffic, truck jake brakes, wind rattle and birds.

Just wondering what you guys might think it is.

I'm late to the party here, but I'm 99.99% certain you heard a cordless sawzall. I spent 13 years working in HVAC and construction, and I recognized that sound right away.

You can recognize the RPM of a cordless sawzall, because they vary by trigger pressure when you're using them. They also don't have any momentum (like a plug-in drill might) and can start and stop within a second.

For reference, here's a clip of a sawzall at work:
https://youtu.be/A_l2TZIrsgQ?t=6

They're cutting through wood in that clip above, but you can likely recognize the similarity. If I were a betting man, I'd say that you heard someone using an 18 volt cordless sawzall to cut through a half-rusted pipe. You weren't alone, but it was definitely human.

Hope this helps!

Not helpful, but I once heard a "monkey", saw a "bald eagle", and awoke a 3 foot long "rat" inside a building in Indiana.

But I'm gonna have to go with the wormhole theory.

Im 99% sure thats battery powered reciprocating saw also known as a sawzall that's most likely cutting some thin metal. I've found scrappers using a sawzall to cut apart hvac ducting, it sounded exactly like that.

Well its mechanical for one and its got me thinking its HVAC and rusty as heck.

If you hear organic growling that's another story.
