LadderGates/LadderShields?
< on 1/13/2019 9:52 PM >

There is a water tower I want to climb with a friend, getting over the fence wasn’t an issue but there is a gate/shield over the ladder that is padlocked. We don’t want to break the lock as that will probably result in increased security measures in the future or otherwise make things harder/riskier. The water tower location is in the middle of nowhere on a hard to reach and use access trail so noise is not an issue. What is the best way of bypassing the gate/shield and accessing the ladder without breaking anything?

The picture is similar to the one on the tower but the shield covers the bottommost tower rung as well

Climb around it and get in the cage above it.
The ones I've seen are easy to breach.

Be aware that active public water supplies are 911 hot spots.
You will most likely get hammered if caught.
Best to leave no signs you were there.
Lol, we used to party on top on the tanks and swim in them.

There is no cage its just the shield and the ladder, we were thinking of trying to climb up the sides of the shield while hugging the main pole but were not going to do it until its dry out. The issue with that is I want to bring this girl up there at some point and she isn’t a very good climber. I appreciate the warning about the police thats wy were doing pur best to minimize our footprint there. Swimming in a pool a hundred feet in the air sounds frigging awesome tho😂

Never climb wet steel.
If someone isn't a good climber this isn't the place to learn.
You need good upper body strength and basic steel climbing skills.
Climb it gripping the rails rather than rungs.
Steel is very unforgiving of mistakes.

Thanks for the advice and the tips I appreciate it, I did not know the part about gripping the rails, I do know how to thread my legs so as to be able to safely “rest” on the ladder. Its not that she doesnt have the upper body strength to climb the ladder, but the physical ability to grip the pole and side of the gate in order to climb past the gate, I don’t know if I even have that ability because I havent tried it yet due tot he weather.

You use the side rails on uncaged ladders, let your body swing slightly side to side.
You can climb large vertical I-beams in a similar fashion.

You should be able to do at least 8 pull ups in strict form; you need to be fit.
Most women can't even do one, lol, hanging there until you fall doesn't cut it when climbing. You need to be strong with enough reserve capacity to safely climb and descend both guard and ladder.

Never jump off a ladder near the bottom if you can avoid it; what you thought was 2 feet might be 5 feet or more... it happens!

Thanks again for the info. Luckily Im pretty good at pullups and reasonably fit, as romantic as it would be I think you’re right about brining a girl up there.

Ironically, climbing long straight ladder like this is a great way to build up the needed muscle.
I'm just afraid she lose it on the guard either going up or coming back down.

Confidence, staying chilly and knowing your limits are important to steel climbing. These come naturally somewhat but are also learned by experience.
Baby steps first...

3 points of contact at all times.

The leg through the rung to rest is an old school technique

Well bois we did it. I stood on my friends shoulders and used an adjustable wrench to get off the nut that held the eye-bolt the padlock was attached to to the ladder gate, that made it possible to open the gate. 5 of us climbed up carefully and had a blast taking pictures and just chilling at the top. Then we climbed down I got back on my friends shoulders and put the nut back in so the gate was once again closed and there was no evidence of us ever being there at all. I appreciate the help and advice especially the grabbing the rails not the rungs. Im proud to say I conquered the laddergate!
