What To Do If You Find Something Bad?

Ok so I was wondering what ya'll would do if you found something major illegal in an explore, like a dead body or something super bad. We're technically trespassers, so would we get in trouble for calling the police? And it would compromise the location, but also what if they think you did it? I'm just curious to see what you guys would think.

I dont think keeping locations a secret would be a top priority in any situation like this.

Depends on just how bad it it. Human corpse? Anonymously report it to the police, giving their family closure is more important than keeping a location secret. Additionally, anything that presents a threat to public safety would be anonymously reported- severely damaged drains, explosives, and extremely hazardous chemicals are all things that should get anonymously reported.

Anything less serious is just something to walk away from.

Kinda bad? Find a working pay phone and call it in. Really bad? Like dead body bad? Cop to your own shit and just call it in. Might be a fellow explorer gone missing

Unlike many here I do have experience reporting both active and latent crimes to state police and FBI.

Depending on the sensitivity of the location, being charged is a risk I'd wager most of us are unwilling to take, at least for reporting something that isn't time sensitive like a body. A fire or arcing HV lines, on the other hand, are something you can plausibly see from the edge of the property in most cases, so you don't have to report it anonymously if you just say you saw it from the street.

Depends on the chemical. If it's a massive leaking petroleum tank right next to a creek, you bet that needs to be reported- oil spills can devastate the local ecosystem. By that same token, some industrial sites may contain hazardous chemicals if the owners didn't properly clean up after themselves, paper mills being an easy example. Most chemicals you can walk away from, but there are some that are dangerous enough that it's too risky to leave them to rot.

Lastly, explosives may be rare, but it's not unheard of to find old dynamite sticks in mine shafts, or hand grenades in the abandoned home of a souvenir- taking veteran. If you leave it, maybe it'll be fine and never detonate- or maybe some kids will sneak inside the house to goof off and not recognize the danger. It's up to you if you're willing to live with that possibility.

Aran, LEOs aren't concerned with a misdemeanor trespassing when you're reporting a felony crime.
Not IDing yourself hinders them and the investigation as well as calling attention to yourself.

If you play with the EPA a bit you'll find out first hand why my chemical advice is sound.
Unless it's a huge spill... and they will soon be aware of it anyway if it's in a waterway.
One of the first things they do at a superfund site is turn in into a parking lot.
Not much left to then, huh?

It depends. Human remains? Call the police. Don't worry about anonymity, you're not going to get charged. Explosives, particularly old explosives? Report it anonymously. Chemical spills depending on the size I probably wouldn't bother with unless it was a very recently abandoned or operational facility. If it's an active site and you see a spill I'd call the company and report it.

Chances are the most dangerous things you'll find are dilapidated buildings and possibly old chemicals. Caution is always advised when exploring.

I always carry a can of petrol (or as the Americans call it, gasoline) so if I find something bad I can simply set fire to the location and walk away. Problem solved!

For me, unless it's a dead body, explosives, or something that could turn into an issue of public safety, I'm generally just going to ignore it & mind my business. Thankfully I've never found anything of the sort, and hope I don't.

I called in a fire a year or so ago. I was outdoors on a dirt road in BFE, so I wasn’t worried about getting in any trouble and the fire was only a mile or so from some rural buildings I had been exploring. I was so off-grid, it took the police a good 15 minutes just to find me (and another 15 minutes to call the right emergency number). The cop arrived first and told me that people come out to these back roads and intentionally start these fires for the sole purpose of keeping the police departments busy while they commit some other crime on the other side of their jurisdiction.

I’ve heard of a lot of crazy antics in my lifetime, but I thought that was pretty fucked up.
It was fun watching (and photographing, of course), when the fire truck finally got there.

Anonymous tip is the way to go. You could really be helping out a family or your community. I've had at least 2 scares with very ominous tarps at locations. One was a perfectly sized tarp for a body with something under it and the other was a tarp that reaked of death. Thankfully both were nothing bad!
