10/07/2017- Rob Park (Feztaa)

I am saddened to relay the news that long-time explorer Rob Park has passed away at the age of 32. Rob was active in both Edmonton and Victoria for many years, participating in hundreds of meet-ups and explorations across Canada. Of particular note was his affinity for photography, which he studied at NAIT and catalogued not only here, but at UEA and on his former website, Exolucere.ca.

Simply put, we would not have the rich photographic record of both present and former exploration sites in and around Edmonton without Rob's keen eye and adventurous spirit; his ability to seamlessly combine his passions was crucial in contributing to what I personally consider the golden age of UE in Alberta.

Rob was a pivotal member of the UE community not only in the cities where he resided, but also online. He was instrumental in introducing countless explorers to the hobby, and was always quick to offer advice. I was especially devastated to learn of his passing for this very reason; "Fez" was the first experienced explorer to show an interest in me when I moved to Edmonton, and we spent many memorable hours traversing long-gone landmarks like the Mill Creek Nunnery and Griesbach.

In recent years, Rob had been working as a software engineer in Victoria, and contributed to innumerable open source projects. However, he not only still found time to immerse himself in his favorite activities, but began to combine them with his professional pursuits- culminating in a popular tool for geotagging photos.

Although Rob left us in October, it was not made public until late last week. My thoughts are with his family- and especially his parents- at this difficult and extremely emotional time.

Sad to hear, I explored with Fez and good bit back in the day. He was a really nice guy and fun to hang with. We will also raise a glass to him at Saturdays memorial for Toad.

Rob's passing was unexpected, and a hard blow to many of us. When you've been friends with someone for so long, it's very hard to accept that they won't be around anymore. There's too much to say, and it's been a difficult time. I hope everyone out there will remember Feztaa at his best- the explorer, photographer, programmer, with a giving heart, strong convictions, and always a loyal friend.
