Elevator shaft keys
< on 8/4/2017 1:55 PM >

I just wanted to let you guys know if you didn’t already that you can buy these cross shaped keys from eBay that open elevator shafts and turn on hydrants and the like. Here is a link: https://goo.gl/F4bCSi

Edit: Accidentally put “fire hydrants” instead of “hydrants” so I corrected

I don't see how any of that is an elevator key at all...and I own an elevator key.

Also if you're caught with an elevator key you're risking trespassing and possession of burglary tools charges.

Fucking with elevator doors can get people killed including yourself.
They are locked out for good reasons.

These don't look like any elevator key I've ever seen. Maybe they would let you access an interior panel or use the fireman's mode from the inside, but you're not gaining access to the elevator shaft with that thing.

I also thought fire hydrants had giant bolts on them that had to be turned with a wrench or something to open them, not some little rinky-dink pocket tool.

Am I missing something?

Open doors that led straight down are unexpected.
People here on UER have come very close to walking through open elevator doors.
More than one person has been killed like this; it happens every year and in active buildings.
In tampering with them one incurs potential legal and criminal liability far beyond trespassing... and it can effect others with life altering consequences.

Almost nothing you say is valid and you just argue for the sake of talking, rarely saying anything of value.

I've been in more active elevator shafts than most people have been in abandonments, You don't open one up and climb in without knowing whats happening, first. Exploring is dangerous. End of.

This actually is not true. And I'm surprised that we have a moderator who tries to suppress another long-time member from communicating useful warnings and information. Blackhawk posts things that keep people alive

Elevator shaft keys, not to operate the elevator but rather to enter the shaft. This is how a lot of the shafts I saw in China operate, are they different here?

Here is a link to the different styles of elevator shaft key:

Edit: Also further research indicates that this key is fairly uncommon in the United States.

That key won't open any hydrant that I know of. Usually you need a hydrant wrench. What it might do is take the covers off of a standpipe, but why anyone on UER would need to do that is beyond me. Tampering with FD property is stupid and could cost someone their life or burn a building to the ground. Then you go to prison. And they don't like arsonists in prison.

Bringing any kind of tools that seem like you have other intentions than photos are risky.

If it isnt open, its probably best to leave it so.

I've encountered a hatch where one of these would've been useful, the locking mechanism required a square rod to be inserted and twisted, I tried using a socket wrench extension, but it was slightly too big. The key seems to be a universal utility key used for getting into maintenance hatches or doors that probably follow a standard on what kind of locking mechanisms they use.

I have opened elevator shaft doors with disposable tools to ride on top, but I neither leave them open nor control an elevator while riding. Those are two things that cause too much risk to others who didn't sign up for the fun.

This is actually really interesting. I doubt I'll ever need one, but I may well buy one anyway, thanks for the info.

This isn't an elevator key, this is a key for electrical stuff and some mechanical stuff. As you actually don't know that, please don't use it on any electrical equipment. This can kill you....
