Sudafed; Phenylephrine(hydrochloride) and Anaphylaxis
< on 7/23/2017 11:27 PM >

Always carry at least 6 caplets.
It can save your life.
Allergic anaphylactic shock can happen at any time to anyone. Severe allergic reactions many times are discovered by accident.
From single to multiple stings to the discovery you have a severe food allergy Sudafed can help.
When you have a severe reaction within minutes hives form and your blood pressure starts dropping out.
If your breathing is affected you have an even worse medical emergency. Epinephrine (adrenaline) is best, but Sudafed will do in a pinch if no epinephrine is close at hand.

https://www.ncbi.n...ticles/PMC3666145/

I developed an allergy to shrimp. The first time I just got a mild case of hives on my hands. The next time, more severe hives and my BP started falling out. I barely was able to swallow 3 caplets of Sudafed (generic, it's cheaper) as my vision was tunneling in even sitting. Within 10-15 minutes I felt good enough to continue driving.
I doubt it would have killed me if I hadn't used the Sudafed; my breathing wasn't affected.
Pretty sure I would have been taking a long nap though until my BP came back up.

Being the bastard I am, I didn't stop eating shrimp; oddly my reaction to it abated.
Never had to use Sudafed again for it.
I carry it now primarily for bee/scorpion stings as it will help the localized minor symptoms but also help treat anaphylactic shock should it progress to a systemic reaction.

Note: try one caplet to see how you react to it before depending on.
May make females drowsy; this is an atypical reaction as it is a stimulate, however I know quite a few women who experience this side effect.

Isn't it safer to just keep epipens on hand?

It's more effective, but Sudafed is easy to carry, compact, last forever and is dirt cheap.
If you have known breathing issues the epipens are a better choice.

In my case Sudafed does the job and is a better choice.
Adrenaline is no fun ride; Sudafed doesn't blow your socks off like adrenaline.
And Sudafed can be used for a runny nose too.
Fits easily into your pocket. I've carried it with me all the time for years.

You would need a prescription for one. Off the counter benadryl(Diphenhydramine) or other fast working antihistamines can work as well. The idea with tablets is not to cure yourself but rather to keep yourself alive for long enough to call 911 or get some epinephrine (And yes if symptoms continue after the first shoot of epi wears off you should take another).( Trained lifeguard and friends with a few paramedics)

Living life dangerously driving after having a reaction like that blackhawk.

Not benadryl! It could put you in the morgue.
It's a depressant and not a vascular constrictor or effective bronchodilator like Sudafed.

I know my limits or I be dead by now... no joke.
Unlike adrenaline, Phenylephrine (hydrochloride) doesn't cause near the increased heart rate or the blood glycogen spike.
Adrenaline is nothing to play with; it can kill and it won't be an easy death.

I dont think i have ever seen Sudafed before in Canada. In any case you are taking the Diphenhydramineto inhibit the histamine response its not the most used antihistamine in emergency departments for nothing ya know.
Ima put it out here now if you really know what you are doing and how your body reacts to various drugs then take blackhawks route (Who knows it might save your life). If not stay safe and stick to the recommended options.

Sudafed is behind the counter stateside and probably in Canada too because meth heads use it to make meth.
It can be bought without a prescription stateside. It's more effective than other decongestants and unique. It was phased out of over the counter cold medicines 10, 20(?) years ago.

Diphenhydramine is a antihistamine.
It takes time to work and is more effective at blocking a histamine reaction than reversing the symptoms.
You don't have a couple hours...
It's good for treating poison ivy.

Phenylephrine (hydrochloride) acts directly on the bronchial passages and blood vessels; it's actions are similar to adrenaline but not as potent or dangerous.
The only lag time is waiting for it to absorb which isn't long.
It's also the best drug for me to treat sinusitis with, which can also drop out my BP.

Now i wonder how well an inhaled corticosteroids would do at treating anaphylaxis.

Not in Canada. Epipen does not require a prescription and sell for about 80$/unit.

My point is the little red pill is versatile, cheap, and easy to carry anywhere.
It's saved me more than once from low BP dropouts.
It can be used as an energy booster and a performance enhancer too.

I don't recommend using it everyday but it's good to have when you need it...

For all y'all complaining about how hard to come by/expensive sudafed has become, have no fear!

The below paper outlines how to make pseudephedrine from methamphetamine. Skip the pharmacy and hit up your local crystal dealer.

http://heterodoxy....do/pseudosynth.pdf

If that's too hard, you can just pour some hot bleach on your stash and you should at least get SOME yield of sudafed.

Dude what? This was a joke.

I'll admit I've been lurking this place for a while but this is my first account and I'm not sure why you're accusing me.

I know that if you're in the same situation but with Benadryl you're supposed to chew the tablet and gargle, then swallow. Would it not be advisable to chew the Sudafed then swallow for a faster reaction then taking the tablet then waiting for the slow release?

You can certainly do that. Some will probably be absorb through the mucous membranes in the mouth as well. It's a bitter pill to chew though
Either way since it's small make sure it gets swallowed; best to use 2 or 3 maybe more if you're a large person or in a life threatening situation.

Swallowed whole it dissolves relatively fast. Even with a full stomach of that dreaded shrimp it kicked in less than 10 minutes after I took it.
In my case I doubt my bp drop would have killed me nonetheless it was great to stop that reaction dead in its tracks.

On topic, though, if you have even the slightest notion that you may be prone to anaphylaxis, you should try to get an epinephrine injector. Sure, sudafed might work "in a pinch", but like you mentioned, if you're actually going into anaphylactic shock and your throat/airways are swollen or constricted, a pill won't do you much good.

Especially considering how easy to get and affordable (now with generic alternatives to Epi-pens available) injectors have become, there's no real reason not to carry one around if you're that concerned.

So sure, nothing wrong with carrying around sudafed and using it if you need to treat low-level allergic reactions or maybe even anaphylaxis that you're able to catch immediately, but it could be pretty dangerous to consider it a substitute for a treatment explicitly designed to treat the condition. There's a reason no one in the medical field recommends sudafed for this purpose.
