Went exploring with Blondbabe88 this past weekend. She was smart like typical and brought a respirator. I got a respirator but don't bring it along with me due to it's addition in weight to my bag.

Manual shooting is super fun! These pictures are all from this last weekend 2-17-2-19! Where will adventures take me next weekend? I'll just have to wait to see. Went to all but one of these pretty cool locations with MrsRoger. One meaning solo. It was scary. JK.

And 2,4,and 5... square them up before you shoot.
#1 not applicable and #6 is pretty well squared up but you should have panned back slightly to catch the line in the right corner.

Hey guys including Blackhawk Crypton and MrsRoger; I just want to say thank you guys for your feedback. I will totally work on the suggestions you guys commented for me to work on. I like the rule of thirds. Negative space certainly something to be more conscious about using while out in the field. So thanks Crypton! ...Blackhawk. YES! squaring off images I agree looks so much cleaner and professional. Honestly I think I try to sometimes but it's not easy. I certainly appreciate you bringing up the topic. I don't use any fancy editing software or like fancy tripod equipment. It's a little bit challenging. But not making excuses. I will be more aware of the three photography ideologies when I'm out shooting it up next time :----)

1. Rule of thirds

2. Negative space

3. Squaring

MrsRoger I too like picture one a lot, but at the same time it hurts me to look at. I think for the reason of not doing that good of a job "Squaring it off prior to opening and closing the shutter. Perhaps with some fancy photo shop yet to acquire I could edit and make the image more soothing and easy to look at. The subject matter though I think is the least cliche and most groovy out of the five images. Also the natural lighting from the decommissioned mill but power still on supports its transparency.

MrsRoger you got some great shots! From that day out exploring too... maybe share some on the forum? No sweat though.

The problem is when the image isn't squared up, it throws everything in the frame cattywampus and out of proportion.
It is one of the most common shooting mistakes.
It is incongruous to how the mind perceives things, for one because our stereo vision and mind integrate what we see. Not so with an image.
It is a mono, flat image and it is distracting when trying to integrate and process the image in the mind.
Sometimes it is useful and deliberately done for effect.

When lining up a shot, it should become second nature to square it off.
In time it becomes almost effortless.
Center of image is at the same height as the center of the lense.
Lines at right angle to the ground preferable on both sides and at least one are a perfect right angle in the frame; they run parallel to one or both sides of the viewfinder.

Wow Jess you are so good at photography. Doesn't matter that you shoot with your phone and not a fancy camera. Just what you choose to point your camera at and the angle which you do is amazing. Both of those images you selected and shared are magnificent. Thanks for sharing!

I love that I have been to that spot the first photo was taken in like ten times and have never gotten a picture through the glass of that room! That is exactly what is so priceless about bringing different new people to locations.

Hey so I have not introduced myself yet. I live in Tualatin just south of Portland Oregon. I love photography. And have been a urban explorer since December 2011. I would love to connect with others close to Portland and explore/take pictures together. Here's some pictures taken in the last couple months. I nearly 9/10 times roll out of the house solo and explore by myself. I much prefer exploring and adventuring with others. Please direct message me, so we can coordinate a time and place to meet one another; and then hopefully after adventurer together. I try to go out at least once a week. I love all types of Urbex. From ruins and demolished remnants to active facilities with power on and humming machinery/production I love it. I also can just as easily go for a hike in beautiful forests and visit some waterfalls and or caves! Yet to explore any mines here in the PNW.

P.S I'll be at Mouser Week this year! Sort of excited but more so worried about the logistics since I booked myself a week there. Mostly intimidated about the cold and the likely snow. If any of you live where the event is and are interested in connecting with me please do! I'd love to talk with you!

I would be more than happy to guide you to the best of what Oregon has to Offer in Urban Exploration point of view. Washington especially Seattle is dope. Vancouver BC Canada, San Francisco, Kansas City Missouri, Cincinnati Ohio, Cleveland Ohio, and New York City are some very special places I have love for in my heart. Sort of random but I just thought I'd throw them out there to any of you just getting into urban exploration. They are urbex wanderlands.

FREEZING COLD SHOOT.
