Scaling Barbed Wire
< on 7/18/2016 4:15 AM >

Good evening, UER.

Let's start yet another thread on effective ways to scale Barbed Wire, with an emphasis on useful tools and constructive feedback (e.g. if I suggest something that'll get someone hurt, you correct me).

I'll start with a simple method to use when 1.) the risk of being spotted is almost negligible, 2.) perimeter fencing is present, 3.) no breaks in the fencing are present, and 4.) "breaking and entering" is not an option:

Go to Wal-Mart, buy two step-ladders, several cheap rugs or carpets, and some puncture-resistant gloves (mechanic's, woodworker's, etc. etc.), and throw them into the trunk of your car (or analogous compartment to your modus transportation of choice).

Then scout out an exploration site. In the middle of nowhere? Good. See fence? Okay. Don't see any holes? Okay. Unwilling to commit the "Breaking" aspect of "Breaking and Entering?" Great!

1. Plant step-ladder *number one*.

2. Lay at least two rugs/carpet-rolls across barbed wire.

3. Toss step-ladder *number two* over barbed wire (for when you're ready to leave).

4. Climb barbed wire, ensuring that the barbs do not penetrate the rug/carpet, and that your legs do not graze the barbs as you climb. (Again, use multiple rugs/carpet-rolls and gloves).

5. Drop to other side.

6. Retrieve blankets (otherwise, they may blow away, or be stolen by a psycho trying to strand you).

7. Retrieve step-ladder *number two* before you leave for good. I leave the most effective method of doing this up to debate (I normally just straddle the fence with my chest and reach down to grab step-ladder *number two*, but I also have long arms).

This is a relatively cheap, relatively effective, relatively safe, and relatively quick way to scale barbed wire shorter than 7 feet (depending on the size of your step ladders). Always use extreme caution and many rugs/carpet-rolls if scaling head-height barbed wire.

Please offer advise under the assumption that the scaling of barbed wire is a necessity.

Jeeesze, just go to the gate and muscle yourself over.
Or find a hole.
Bringing ladders shows intent, is a pain, is unneeded, and just a basic lack of style unbecoming of a seasoned explorer.

Always choose your breaching point wisely...
The most dangerous fence to breach is an unstable one even if it's just chain link. I've gotten hung up like that with the top wires stuck in my pants... it can be hard to get off when you're using both arms to support yourself and the fence is not staying still
Yes you could easily end up with a ripped nut sack or thigh if you don't stay chilly or are a weak sucker. At the best you'll just have a hole in your pants or a ripped out pants leg. I ended up pushing off after being hung up for over a minute and landing on my back, intact, on the other side... don't get too clever for your own good!

Always breach fences were they're stable preferably by a tree, telephone pole or other object to aid your climb/stability, at a gate or in a corner section. At the top pay close attention to not getting snagged on a barb(s) or wire. Take your time and do it right.
Don't leap down; climb down.
Throw your gear over, don't climb with it unless you're strong enough to and it's strapped to you high and proper.
Avoid razor wire, an entanglement with it can be fatal.

You need to be fit. At the minimum able to do at least 10 body drips and 6 chin ups. Otherwise you're shit's going to be weak especially if you run into trouble.

^ I agree with the gist of that.

For the overwhelming majority of explorers, the steps in this tutorial are simply not useful.

Banalzen, thank you for taking the time to type this and welcome to UER. But I suspect that as you continue exploring and climbing, you'll realize your advice in this thread is not very helpful.

“Heh, urban explorers always have trouble with the wall. Can’t ever seem to find the door.”
