I came up with something creative to drive the point home.

Seriously, exploring is dangerous.

Since I generally explore in the city, I like to park fairly close by in an inconspicuous parking lot. Supermarkets are great since there are plenty of other cars and people around, though I've also had good luck with church parking lots. Obviously tailor your parking to where you are and adjust your story similarly. If you want to hike to something out in the country a bit you can always have an Uber drop you off somewhere and say you are going for a hike. Makes a daypack a little less conspicuous to them and leaves a car that can be linked back to you out of the equation.

When I want to aerial video a location usually I'll drive up and just park wherever's easiest but that's because I'm staying with my car in plain sight.

To contrast, to enter the same site on foot, I park off the property [rural, farm land] and just somewhere random. My car is neither old nor new, it's the sort of thing you see, and forget right after. I certainly go for the (almost excessively) stealthy walk on train tracks or a roadside ditch instead of parking nearby.

As previously stated, follow the gut. *thumb up*

Just park in front of it and make sure you put a cone behind your vehicle and next to each outside facing tire.

Even on a parking lot do the cone behind your vehicle and they know your vehicle belongs there.

I tend to be a long-haul approach kind of guy - I'll park somewhere nondescript and hike in. If there's water access, I'll launch my kayak from a little ways away and get in from the water. I figured the extra hike/paddle is worth the lack of hassle later on.

how fun! and what an extra layer of adventure the kayak makes. kind of huck finn-ish. it is so ideal for this state too as there is so much everywhere.

I actually had a cop stop while I was jimmying a lock, I waved and he drove off.

Parking is always tricky but as I see it you have two choices. Park far away and hike in, or right up close and and act like you own it!

as i've been thinking about approach, i've been imagining just owning it as a really good way to go. appearing as though as i am there with an official purpose. at least this would be a good option when it is really difficult to be completely inconspicuous.

Well known locations are well known. There are many car break-ins here along isolated parking areas used by hikers. Prowlers know they'll be parked for a while. Always try to think what comes to your mind if you saw a car parked where you're going to park.

I think we talked about that a couple of times.

I park in front of the building as I am supposed to be there.
Having an amber light bar on the vehicle, some magnetic red-white strips in the back and two cones next to the tires or behind the vehicle makes sure that everyone know that I am supposed to be there.

I never had problems with this and had PD driving by without even wondering what I am doing.

In some cases I was even wearing a orange reflective vest and a helmet as well as carrying my respirator.

If I have to park on the shoulder of a major street I turn the old school light bar even on. It's one of the rotating ones I just switched from two 55 Watt lamps to 10 watt LED light so I don't suck my battery empty.

The only time I didn't do that was next to the Police training facility.
There I parked three buildings away.

Scrappers will most times drive right in like they belong. Having a vehicle means you can carry tools in and items out easily. Cops know this.
If you are parked onsite, the police can also have your car towed. No easily skipping out the back now...

Nothing works every time, every where. Dumb luck sometimes is all that stands between you having a great day or things just going to shit.
Best to stay out of sight on well patrolled properties. Park where it's not completely obvious where you went.

At Beth Steel I simply park with other cars about a block from the blast furnaces. The parking lot extended right up to them. Predawn, no one noticed you walking across the lot then skirting down the tracks ran behind the complex, a blind spot. If they did spot you, stay on the tracks and cross to the river. Back track when it's clear again, and either go in or leave.
Try to have a plan b.

That's why you park on public land, side of a street (if it's permitted), or other places that are right in front of it.

In Texas even if a vehicle is parked on the shoulder of a highway, it has to have a warning on it for at least a week or so before it gets towed, so no towing when it's parked on a public road unless it's in a driving lane.

True they can't tow a legally park vehicle useless you're arrested. Proximity implies presence though.
I've done that at Rattlesnake Airbase. Sometimes it works... crap shoot.
Wide open areas are problematic
as are small towns. A bike is useful.
Silos are pains too if the vehicle is spotted by the owner or police and they're ambitious.

I've seen people drive into Pennhurst in the day, and tour it, getting in and out. Others got popped just trying to drive in. A bicycle worked well or cutting through the woods from a mile away.

If they don't see you or your car no one will ever know. Public parking lots if near can be safer and less noticeable.

In order to be arrested I would have to not follow them asking me to leave the property.
As they have to ask first.

As long as I just got caught trespassing they have to ask me to leave before they would be able to arrest me after they gave me the chance to leave and I didn't take the chance.

I have the option of live streaming to a youtube channel, so in case I get in such confrontation I can record it and it doesn't matter if they would destroy my phone, up to that point it would be recorded on Googles servers.

In Texas if it's fence in with a locked gate, and especially if the fence posts are clearly marked with signs or purple paint they don't have to ask. You are trespassing and can be arrested. Maybe shot by a rancher too. Ranchers will take you down at gun point in Texas.

Taping or streaming a cop while you are being detained, investigated or arrested is just asking for max trouble. Failure to obey an officer's lawful commands can land you felony charges rather fast. On private land you forfeit many of your rights in Texas... there's a reason for all the fences is it isn't always cattle...
Good luck.

In the city, parking is easy. In the rural areas, parking right in front should be a last resort. It's best to park at a nearby shop or fast food place or other business whenever possible, and wall over. When that's not possible, another option if you have four wheel drive is to drive into the woods or a field and hide the car.

Actually the only places that have fences at all sides are hunting ranches.
Most properties have a fence at the street side.

And in most cases were a LEO wanted to do an unlawful DL check on my they changed their attitude when they saw I have a dashcam, so luck isn't needed.

Is that the case? In the entire state of Texas, only the ranches are posted and fenced off?

It seems -everything- is fenced off Texas. Never seen so much barbed wire fence in my life as here. Most areas here any time on leave the roadway you're on private land.

It's not just hunting ranches, get real.
I've dealt with more cops over the years than years you can possibly live. With your charming attitude your in for some surprises, enjoy

All my run-ins with PD or Sheriff was actually on property that wasn't fenced in.
I was only shot at ones so far, but the idiot used a shotgun on an 1/8 mile distance.

But then, I am also a Disaster Housing Inspector, so I can always say I wanted to do some training in an off disaster area.

Best noob question I've seen. Parking in a bad spot will ruin your explore pretty quickly. Even someone I didn't know parking badly at the same building I was exploring has caused me headaches.

I don't think there's really one good answer to this question but I do think it's worth the extra walking to park discretely. My personal record is 8 miles with a pack full of camping gear

I would definitely recommend the parking off site. The police towing your car is the first tactic to get you to come out of the building.
