Your first bike? Tips?

I have been looking into buying my first motorcycle, signed up for the MSF class and everything. The bikes I have been looking at have been around the 2,500 mark and I am a highschool student working part time. It will probably take me to the near end of this season to save u enough for like a few year old ninja 250r or something like that. What bikes did you guys start out on? Any recommendations to save money?

Started on a 1973 Hodaka Combat Wombat, believe it or not. I have an 8 year old Ninja 250, and it may be the best vehicular investment I ever made. Reliable, cheap to own and operate, peppy enough to get you out of trouble in traffic, but not going to do an out of control wheelstand when you don't need it.

My first real street motorcycle was a cbr600, I would highly recommend not buying something like that as a starter bike . I was 15 turning 16 and I'm not quite sure why my parents were on board with the idea but lucky for me I've lived to tell .

Yeah, I've been looking into ninja's and there seems to be some controversy regarding starting on a 250 but I think for my purposes it inst an issue.

I started on a dual sport Kawasaki KLR 650 that I got from a military auction, still have the darn thing in Desert storm camo.

anyways take a bike that you feel comfortable on first and nothing too high powered, id take a Honda 250 at the most or even the new Honda Grom

Im unable to get my mind around anything but a HD maybe a vintage Indian but I gotta advise newbs to consider Honda. The dealer support is unmatched. Parts (factory new parts) available going back to 1969 models. If its not in stock they can get it in 3 days!

I picked up a couple of second hand Honda dirt bikes reasonable. A XR100 for the wifey and a XR 600 for me, both needed quite a bit of work and I spent many a late night and a lot of money refurbing and upgrading them and at the end of the 2years I sold them for what I had in them even a little more.

Better eat a good breakfast if your going to kick start the 600 though because it has no electric start, the 650 now does.

Honda makes some small street bikes I would guess they are very cheap and very reliable too.

My advice... buy used, buy cheap, buy small (500cc or less with few exceptions), and spend your money wisely on good gear.

A good starter bike can usually be sold for pretty near what you paid for it after a year or two.

My first few bikes were pretty much junkers, but one of the bikes I currently own is a Yamaha XT250. A bike like it would a good choice for a beginner.

Having taken the MSF class is great! Getting some experience off-road can be very helpful too.
