New to Exploration - Critique Please
< on 1/3/2015 8:41 PM >

I stumbled upon this thread a few days ago and was surprised at how big the community was. I'm still very much a rookie to both exploration and photography so any advice is much appreciated.

These look OK for the most part, but:

#1 and #3
could possibly benefit from a slight boost in brightness, (or both brightness and contrast) which will help to add a little depth. However, the pictures are already underexposed, so taking the edit too far might make it look bad.

#4
looks like an accidental picture and I'm not sure what I am looking at. Perhaps include a different angle and/ or background or foreground object to add some context.

#6
is a job for Photoshop, since you can keep the nice sky you have just the way it is, but isolate the foreground/ cityscape (which is much too dark) and then plug in some more brightness. Obviously though, depending on your camera, you can only edit so much before you run into a wall.

I still have a lot of work to do as a photographer but thank you for the advice. Definitely need to work on my composition in later photos.

#1 interesting record of fallen ceiling; the texture of the supporting structure would have been nice.

#2, a fine moody reflection.

#3 too dark, of course, but what can you do? The perspective lines lead outside the frame to the left; having the implied vanishing point inside the frame would be better.

#4 accidental shot?

#5 the bolts are the good part. Try cropping it so they're featured.

#6 sunsets always push the automated exposure too high. Next time try exposure compensation of about -1. This is also a good place to try HDR.

Working in ruins, there is chronically not enough light. So large areas of some of the pics seem boring only because they're obscure.

One thing you can try is light painting, by you or a helper. I've gotten good results with an exposure time of four seconds, in shutter priority manual mode.

Another idea, if you dare to use flash, is to tape a muffin cup or something semi-opaque over the flash to disperse the light. If you have the time, take the same flash pic with different shutter speeds and pick the best. Or merge them with HDR software.

These are all a little dark. Expose one more stop next time.
