Posted by vokapolis Why the hell was there a prayer going on in the senate in the first place? The United States Senate is no place for any religion. |
Posted by MutantMandias History would disagree with you on that. |
Posted by vokapolis History would disagree with me on a lot of things. Just because we've always done something some way, doesn't mean that's the right way to do it. |
Posted by Harvestman Pretty sure that Mandias isn't arguing that religion should have a place in the government...instead, just pointing out that the founding of the country did feature the involvement of certain religious principles. No one asked for my opinion, I know, but I think church and state should be kept far apart. |
Posted by MutantMandias I was more pointing out the fact that prayers precede just about every political process, and always have. Just a few days ago, the Supreme Court upheld the practice: The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday gave local government officials across the United States more leeway to begin public meetings with a prayer, ruling that sectarian invocations do not automatically violate the U.S. Constitution. The court said on a 5-4 vote that the town of Greece in New York state did not violate the Constitution's ban on government endorsement of religion by allowing Christian prayers before monthly meetings. Although such prayers have long been a tradition in some communities, the high court had never before expressly said sectarian prayers could be constitutional in some circumstances or specifically held that prayers could be given before meetings of local government entities. In Monday's closely divided decision, the court said a prayer could violate the Constitution if there was an attempt to intimidate, coerce or convert nonbelievers. You might also be interested in the United States Senate Chaplain's Office: Throughout the years, the United States Senate has honored the historic separation of Church and State, but not the separation of God and State.... During the past two hundred and seven years, all sessions of the Senate have been opened with prayer, strongly affirming the Senate's faith in God as Sovereign Lord of our Nation. |

Posted by splumer What burns my ass is the idiots who think the US is a Christian nation, founded on Biblical principles, etc., and seek to deny religious freedom from those who do not share their version. |
Posted by splumer I agree with you, but per the SCOTUS, and as long as they allow religions other than Christianity to offer prayers, then it's OK. |
Posted by MutantMandias Werd. The founding fathers didn't even pray to Jesus like these shitheads were. Florida Town Must Open Meeting With Satanic Prayer or Violate Supreme Court Ruling http://aattp.org/f...reme-court-ruling/ Less than three days after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the town of Greece, NY’s claim that opening its meetings with what amounted to Christian-only prayer did not violate the Establishment clause of the Constitution (somehow), a Florida resident is putting the ruling to the test! |

Posted by Harvestman I'm sorry, but how is this any better than Christian-exclusive prayer? Isn't exclusivity the issue here, no matter what religion it is? |
