Joshua Lee Coffey got into an argument with his mother Sherri at the family home, last week. The 25-year-old claimed she was “attempting to poison him,” because “the meat he was given to eat was pork, which was against his Muslim religion.” Coffey threatened to kill his mother and her boyfriend, Mark Blair, both of whom were eating dinner in their bedrooms. According to a criminal complaint, Coffey grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and held it “in a threatening manner.” According to cops, Coffey held the knife to the throat of Mark Blair, his mother’s boyfriend, and threatened to kill him if his mother called the police. Sherri climbed out of a window to safety and called 911. When cops arrived, the suspect was still holding the knife but surrendered the weapon without incident. He was arrested and booked into the Elk County jail on simple assault and making terrorists threats, both misdemeanor charges. Coffey is being held on in lieu of $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 25.

It was called that long before 9/11 ... Many states simply grade hostile words as assault.
PA Crimes Code § 2706. "Terroristic threats." (d) Grading. --An offense under subsection (a) constitutes a misdemeanor of the first degree unless the threat causes the occupants of the building, place of assembly or facility of public transportation to be diverted from their normal or customary operations, in which case the offense constitutes a felony of the third degree.
