Entry: Dead Mall originally posted by Steed |
A dead mall is a shopping mall with a very high vacancy rate, a low consumer traffic level, or that is otherwise outdated or deteriorating. Usually this is caused by the closure or failure to attract anchor stores (usually large department stores) that pull in traffic which diverts to the smaller stores in the mall. The causes of a mall becoming a ghost mall could be economic decline in the surrounding community, competition from a newer, larger mall nearby, competition from big box stores such as Walmart that prefer separate buildings rathr than anchor positions in malls, changing trends in consumer habits, and just building too ambitiously. http://www.deadmalls.com is a popular resource for finding dead malls, with around 300 listed across the US, Canada, China, and New Zealand. |
