Why do you keep posting things about these whackjobs? No one takes these people seriously. Posting these articles about these tiny little crazy "churches" has as much bearing as someone posting an article about devil worshipping lyrics hidden songs. It's pointless and stupid.

pointing out the insanity of other hiding behind god is never stupid or pointless... it's pure entertainment.

On the contrary, it's always good for a laugh. The scary part is, the FLDS might try to usher in the end by other means.

certainly there's some mental illness going around in that cult.

it strikes me there's plenty of it going around on this board, too... aggressively anti-religious individuals entrenched in their own pathologies, whose grudge against the religious is more about their own inability to cope with negative thoughts, emotions and failures in life, than it is about the beliefs of anyone else.

unfortunately, it takes quite a lot of progress to get to the point where you can audit your own confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance and negative affect. participating in straw-man religious forums certainly doesn't help.

i'm not religious (and i am a scientist, gasp!), but i find atheism generally to be small-minded -- the product of perpetually frustrated and emotionally unhealthy people whose experience of atheism is more about attacking the beliefs of others than it is about their own convictions.

all i've really done here is repackage some of the anti-religious vitriol here, kept the tone consistent to other posts, and turned it back on the originators. not very productive, is it? gives us something to think about.

No one? 6,000 to 10,000 members in this splinter cult alone.

Sounds like a little cognitive dissonance. (it's hard to achieve harmony with aliens, gold tablets, child rape on one side and the observable world on the other.)

Maybe if more people pointed out how stupid ideas like this are, less people would get sucked in.

Maybe if more people point out this stupidity, and ignore the special pleading that religious beliefs should not be subject to scrutiny or ridicule like other equally retarded ideas, then maybe the whole debate could move in positive direction.

Like how these idiots could cause less harm with their stupid divisive magical beliefs that have no basis in reality.

you're referring here to atheism, correct? i agree, it is a sad phenomena: insects so certain of the exactness of their perception that they carve out for themselves a sliver of tenuous logic and plant upon it a flag with "reality" scrawled in crayon. if religious fundamentalists are the pre-schoolers of modern thought, then atheists are the kindergarteners. the framework of your beliefs is amusingly similar to those you critique.

it must give you some comfort, though, to live in a fantasy world so bankrupt of intellectual content and original thought. i can see the attraction, as it is difficult to acknowledge humanity's status as a barely-evolved collective of organisms characterized more by the empirically-returned answer "we don't know yet" than an evidence-based understanding of the universe around them.

please, though, continue to regale us with your fascinating re-tread of the juvenile opinions of Dawkins and chronic misunderstanding of the mass-market writings of Hawking.

or perhaps you ignore them. The more attention you give them the more they feel legitimized. You think westboro would be out there doing their stuff if they didnt get tons of media coverage? 6-10k is nothing, more people show up to a single football game than this group has world wide. You are gonna obsess over every little stupid cult then you have a long road ahead of you. There are cults for almost everything, even ones for science that are stupid. Hollow earth, ufos, aliens, ghosts, cryptozoolgy, atheism, and more all have their roots in science and are far more popular and some are far dumber than these obscure cults you drag up from the corners of the internet.

But nothing anyone says will ever cause you to pause or think. You are too stuck in your narrow minded, hateful, and bigoted views to ever see anything else. You are almost as blind as Westboro and these cults you rail against so much. You've become indoctrinated by your own "superior knowledge" and understanding of the world that you can't even be remotely wrong about anything. You are so stuck in your own twisted thoughts that you will never change. I hope one day i can have as much misplaced confidence in everything I say and do to be able to treat others like they are below me. The day i know everything will be a great day. Until then, i will continue to question everything and have to accept that i can't generalize everything into good and evil. For now i will have to live with the spectrum of colors instead of a black and white world.

Declaring something as stupid is purely an opinion. People in these cults apparently think that it makes perfect sense.

I take exception to even pejoratively characterizing it as superior knowledge. At best it's last decade's pop-atheism and smirking hipster bigotry that would get laughed out of any serious discussion between legitimate academics, scientists, philosophers or theologians. I've read their posts, they've got nothing original to say and generally have a only a tenuous grasp of the goings-on and latest thinking in the modern scientific and/or theological-philosophical community. (i do consider Mandias somewhat of an exception to this. While he does seem to take a perverse delight in challenging religious belief, amidst this he asks important questions and gives informed, relevant, considered replies).

But lets be clear: there is no "crusade for truth" going on in this sub-forum, and very little substantive discussion of the reasons why God / a god / the supernatural may or may not exist. It's a club where embittered pseudo-intellectual pretenders pat themselves on the back over how "superior" and "clear-thinking" they are, with a preponderance of straw-man argumentation and parrot-like repetition of imperfectly understood reasoning heard elsewhere.

Ad hominem attack much? For a scientist, you resort to a lot of logical fallacies.

There are maybe a tenth that many people involved in al Qaeda, yet we saw fit to start wars over them. The FLDS church is somewhat less dangerous, of course, but they are given a pass because they're nice, religious people. And religious people have never done anything wrong.

Oh come one, you know better than that. You're saying this little cult, which has not harmed anyone, is only slight less dangerous than the al qaeda. Please tell me you dont seriously intend to lump this cult anywhere near the same category as al qaeda. Even Westboro isn't has bad the al qaeda. On top of that no one is giving them a pass. You give special treatment to that homeless guy screaming that the aliens are controlling our brains? No, you chalk it up as a lunatic ranting. Which is exactly how all these nutso cults should be treated. Just because you're religious doesn't give you a pass, remember the child rape in the Catholic church, Jonestown, and Westboro? None of them are treated nicely and they are all religious groups/cults. In general cults are not given preferential treatment ever. Here in my town we have a cult called twelve tribes, and in the 80s people ran them out of town BC the were scared of them. Now they are back, and everyone knows they are a cult, but no one gets worked up over it because they dont do anything except run an organic restruant. FLDS is no more a Christian group than heavens gate was an ad for Nike.

I have a better idea. Show us (atheists, agnostics and religious folks all) how much you know about reality & the universe -- this sum of knowledge upon which you've based your absolute certainty that god does not exist. This is important for you to prove, because you've taken a position on something and I've never seen you say anything that backs it up.

Picking a few assorted topics for you: Talk about relativity, and then talk about quantum theory. Go into the mathematical model of space-time (or bonus points for quantum space-time!) if you like. Describe how reality & the observable universe came to be, and whether it is finite or infinite. Don't be out-dated and naughty and lean too heavily on the Big Bang or overly abstract theoretical models, especially if you can't talk in detail about what happened prior to the Big Bang. Really try to focus on internal consistency as you describe these models. If you can link these together into evidences against god, more bonus points and I'm sure everyone will be very impressed with you.

I eagerly await your reply. Be careful what you find on the Internet as you try to craft your answer -- Popular Science, Discover & Wikipedia aren't going to be very helpful I'm afraid.

If you can't provide a reply that is informative and convincing, then you've proven my point for me and you will seem a fool in the eyes of your opponents.

Bring it, Sam.

edited: clarified "overly abstract theoretical models" from "theoretical models" since the latter criteria would rule out any conversation at all

why should I? My position on religion is well-known and therefore I am not going to defend it again. I don't like religion. I don't believe in god and I honestly think that people who believe in the concept of god are a bit crackers. You strike me as a pompous douchebag. Maybe you're swell in person, but on this forum, you come across as the kind of guy that i could listen to for about five minutes and then I'd start looking for a knife to cut out your tongue.

i'm not debating you as I don't give a shit if you like it or not. Have a nice fucking day.

it amazes me that the way i'm talking about you folks can bother you at all, considering the way each of you describes people with religious beliefs as: idiots, morons, retards, perverts, stupid blathering vapid simpletons. i put a mirror in front of you blowing those words up in your face, and suddenly rude hostility is no longer OK?

interestingly, this is the same type of interaction happening throughout modern thought. atheists are so used to being the wolves that they don't know what to do when hunters show up.

To deny that fairies exist, do I need to have a degree in fairy-ology? I freely admit I don't have the science bona fides, but as a scientist, you are quite aware that the burden of proof lies with those making claims. If I claim there is a china teapot orbiting Jupiter this very moment, there is no reason to believe that that is true unless I provide some evidence. If I fail to provide adequate evidence, then there is no reason to believe the teapot is there.

I take it you are also familiar with Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation for how everything in the universe works is that there are no supernatural agencies of any sort, and that life is a series of electro-chemical reactions. Yes, it might be "simpler" to say that a god made something, but I would argue that that isn't an explanation, but more of a lazy excuse.

For anything supernatural to exist (including ghosts, psychic phenomena, etc.) the known laws of nature have to be suspended, or simply be wrong. Let's go back to fairies, shall we? There are some people who believe in them. If fairies exist, we might ask, how come no one has ever taken a photo of one? Because they're invisible, a believer might answer, but that would mean that all the laws of nature that say that material things are visible (sometimes only with help, in the case of atoms or other particles), and all the empirical evidence which has supported those laws, and indeed has made them laws.

May I ask in which scientific field you work?

I never say this though, I keep it to myself. If I somehow find myself in the presence of any brand of religiridoo I just smile, and vow to stick with beer for the rest of the night and steer clear of the hard shit. Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want, and that freedom is a cornerstone of any civilization worth half a shit.

Even if they're all retarded.
