Tokina 12-24mm f4 VS Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6
< on 9/29/2012 8:52 PM >

I am looking for a new wide angle lens for my D7000 and I have a choice between the Tokina 12-24mm version 1 and the Sigma 10-20mm. Both I am looking at, are going used for the same price on Craigslist, $350. Which one would you suggest? I do a lot of shooting in drains on a tripod along other typical above ground urban exploration photography. I am personally leaning toward the Tokina, but I wanted some outside input.

Tokina
Pros:
Sharper
Faster
Better build

Cons:
More CA
Shitty Micro-motor AF

Sigma
Pros:
Wider
Better AF

Cons:
build quality
poor resolution

I've owned the Sigma and found it to be seriously lacking on higher resolution cameras. It was fine on an 8MP Rebel XT or 12MP XSi but you can really see the difference in loss of detail on a 18MP 7D.

I have a Sigma 8-16mm now. I'd recommend saving up for that or the 11-16/2.8 Tokina.

Well I need a lens now on the budget of $350, the lens I was using got destroyed when my camera strap broke on my bike. I will probably go with the Tokina, I rarely use AF anyways given the situations I shoot in.

I would probably vote for the Tokina too given your budget. I tried a couple of sigma's before I bought my wide angle. The corners where not very good but the center was great, don't know if that make a difference for your style of shooting.
The Tokina will be good and built like a tank (great for draining/urbex environments) and will probably be a little cheaper.

I'd say go for the Tokina (I have it and it's a great lens) but I suggest that you wait a little longer and go for the superior 11-16mm f/2.8 instead. Since the second generation of that lens came our recently, you're probably going to be able to find the previous one for about $450.

Hey there yall, just thought I would update this and say that I did end up going with the Tokina 12-24mm and that I absolutely love it, couldn't be happier with it!
