When I did own one (running) bike and no car, it was a 1975 Goldwing GL1000.

It worked well for transportation as it had a windshield (and a Vetter fairing) and saddle bags.

For riding in traffic, I like something with a mostly upright riding position.

Anykinda standard or cruiser 250cc and up would work. Saddle bags are a must.

I own 27 motorcycles.......... But if I had to own only one? It would be a BMW GS1200...... Big enough for long trips, sturdy enough for offroad travel, shaft driven, who wants to fuck with a chain while on a trip? Plenty of power to haul camping equipment.

Dual Sport so you can go anywhere with it.

Good choice, the 650 based dual sports are great offroad and for short bursts on the freeway. But for some reason 900cc and above is what you need for all day 80mph travel while hauling all your gear.

Check out 40miledesertrat, he's a UER member...... he does some very serious offroad travels on his GS. I've talked with him he's good folk.

Have fun with the new scoot.

KLR 650 here. Currently my only bike. People look at it all the time and say "dirt bike". LOL. If you want a dirt bike, a KLR would suck! It is a street bike with ground clearance, great for hoping curbs and for bad roads. But dual sports are not for you if you want to do serious offroading.

Dualsports are for you if you want to do offroading far away and can't trailer the bike.

You just need to be in good shape to keep lifting the pig out of the mud ;p The bigger displacements might be a smooth ride getting there, but holy crap do you ever not want that power to turn against you.

KLR650 is my ride and I gotta say it's my only dualie yet but the ease of working on it is just phenomenal. If I was gonna choose any other bike to be my one n only it would have to be just as easy to wrench on.

Of course if money was no issue I would just pay someone to work on my Hellcat and travel distances by plane.

That is a sweet bike. I love those GS's and have spent many hours reading about them on ADV. I love the opposed cylinder engine, especially since it's tried and true. I really like the look of the GS800, but they are all nice. Even the old school ones look really sweet!

I bought a KLR650. I love the thing. Not super fast but I made a solid 75mph with gear on the back coming down to to shore this last weekend. I love it. Super reliable and get me a good 50mpg.
