0rding
< on 4/9/2012 7:58 PM >

Been spending my weekends riding the access roads and trails of Fort Ord lately. I travel light, so the photos are taken with an Iphone and will not be of superior quality to say the least. Just thought I'd start this thread to share with everyone what I've come across out there. Some locals are aware of what's still out there but most just don't care, which is evident by the graffiti and destruction of some areas. Anyway, I'll be adding pictures over time, starting with a couple of shots I took of an old firing range close to East Garrison this last weekend. Hope there's some interest still. They will eventually tear down everything out there, and my goal is to capture most of it before its gone.

Rode by there Saturday on my bike but they have Impossible Canyon gated off right now, so you can only get a glimpse of it from Barloy Canyon.

The fences and gates there are a joke and shouldn't be a hindrance. Its best to go in on the weekend or at night, be careful though as there have been recent reports of mountain lions in the area hunting.

Lots of work being done there but the workers dont seem to care if you make yourself invisible enough. We got caught leaving a fenced section and the worker simply told us to come back after work hrs, he then proceeded to tell us where another location was. LOL.

Jump over to the Pac/SW area and you'll find plenty of great Ordness to look through, plus others in the area you can explore with while out there...

Heres a couple examples......

Not to mention the awesome Impossible City photos others have got.

Here is the thread from the 2011 Ord meet-up. Just about every location on the west side is in this one, including the treatment plant.

Firing range on the edge of East Garrison. The vegetation is taking over.

As you can see, the structure is just a little bit unstable...

Its not the Mountain Lions or the workers that concern me. Impossible City is still used by the FBI and Navy Seals for urban warfare exercises, and they have been seen there on weekends also. A night time visit may be worth a try though. Thanks for the info

This location is quite interesting. About a mile and a half N.E of Impossible City contains 6 or 7 large buildings, and 10 large bunkers lined up at the S.Eastern edge of this fenced in area. A sign in front of one of the buildings reads "Surveillance Workshop".

Snapped this on my way to Marina Dunes. Overlooks the 12 ordinance bunkers in the sand dunes.

Another explorers uncle was caught out there years back by SWAT and they fucked with him pretty good, just to let him know he didn't belong there. That being said, they only train there occasionally and usually do it in the early morning. The odds of you seeing them at the facility are pretty low. I would concentrate on avoiding the park rangers. Hint: If there is a law enforcement convention in the bay area...avoid the place, oh and this....

Nice photos of the City. I'm curious, have you been able to penetrate the area about a mile and a half N.E of there on Barloy Canyon? I have a feeling that getting caught in there might land you in some serious shit.

On another note.. I'm not sure if its cuz I'm using my stupid Iphone to capture my pics with or what, but when I resize them down to 100k and upload them they are too small, as you can see. How can I get them to show full size?..or should I just start lugging a D90 around with me?

Upload your pics to Flickr, or start an Ubuntu One account and link your photos from there. Recommend Ubuntu One highly as it will sync storage across platforms, and a free account gets you 5GB. Resize pics to 1024*768.

As long as you stay on the public road you are alright, go off it and it may be a federal matter in some areas (and a bit fool-hardy with all of the munitions around). I would recommend mapping out the places you want to go to and looking for available cover and stash spots for your bike around the areas. This may be a bit harder now as they have cut much of the trees and brush back to do munitions removal and maintenance.

I own a D90 and wouldn't think of using anything else. Please start lugging it out there . I would love to see pics and know the status. I am very interested in the current progress of the demo at this site. The last time I was in this area was about three months ago.
