Ontario's Pit Bull Ban
< on 3/30/2012 9:54 PM >

This summer, MPP Randy Hillier is making it his mission to repeal the current breed-ban of pitbulls in Ontario. If you visit the website you can add your voice to the cause, send messages to your local MPP, and upload pictures of your pits, bullies, staffies and everything in between.

Breed specific bans are canine racism, and we need to make it known that we will not tolerate the punishment of our pets for the actions of bad owners.

My American Staffordshire Terrier, Rufus.
He passed away last May, but he was the best dog I've ever had.

That was one beautiful dog. What do dog experts (vets, breeders, trainers, etc.) think of the ban? I've been attacked by more poodles than any other breed.

Thanks, he was such a handsome boy. We miss him terribly.

Everyone thinks its crap. The legislation doesn't even cite pit bulls specifically, its merely describes a dog with broad shoulders, short hair and a wide forehead. Which is why they can use it against any dog they think fits that description. Any vet or trainer can tell you - it all comes down to how to raise the dog and train them early on.

My dog Rufus (above) was about 120 pounds, but he grew up alongside my younger brother, they really were more like siblings. Which is a huge reason why Rufus never became food-aggressive or possessive about things. My brother, as a toddler, would take a bone right out of his mouth... and Rufus would just wait to have it back. Never even batted an eye.

But it broke my heart when, while walking him in town, people would pull their kids away or cross the street when they saw us. One time a little girl came up to Rufus and asked to pet him. Before I could reply, her mom yanked her back and spouted some crap about big dogs being mean. Little did she know, Rufus was amazing with kids.

Ignorance led to the Ontario ban being passed, but hopefully with the support of local MPPs it will be seen for what it truly is - ridiculous.

EDIT: Also, I worked in pet stores for a total of 4 years, and the dogs I have been bitten by were ALL SMALL BREEDS.

I have personally had terrible experience with Pits and Pit crosses. Do not like them at all. That being said, I would have to agree that its not the dog, its the owner, especially in the very young period of the dogs life. No such thing as a bad dog, just a dog that never got exposed to a GOOD dog-person experience. Much as I dislike Pits, I sort of feel like singling them out is just flat wrong. How can you just make my dog illegal? If they made Yorkies illegal and said I had to give up my dog, I'd lose my damn mind on somebody.

I appreciate that despite your bad experiences with them, you still support that "breedism" is wrong. I wish more people had that thought process.

Please come visit me so we can hang out, shoot guns, and you can meet some awesome pit bulls.

Hooray, Ontario! I wish you luck in getting BSL rescinded. When pit bills are outlawed, only outlaws will have pit bulls!

True! But it sucks that right now, if you have a pit you ARE considered to be an outlaw. lol There will always be people who give merit to the stupid bans by continuing to fight their dogs. I think those people are the ones who deserve to be put down.

Ban chihuahuas.

I've had more issues with them than I've ever had with pit bulls. My grandmother had the most miserable chihuahua...used to be an anklebiting pants ripper.

I usually don't say things like this...but I wasn't sorry to hear he was dead.

Good luck getting that ban rescinded.

Well I'd be a hypocrite if I said I thought it was ok to ban ANY breed specifically... but I agree with you. I have had more bad experiences with small breed dogs than anything else - because people don't think they need to train something as big as a stuffed animal. Which again, comes back to shitty owners.
