Developing my first roll in my own darkroom

So next Tuesday I am developing my first roll of film in my own personal darkroom YAY! The only problem is that the stop I bought with my darkroom equipment is bad. And after having to buy some stuff for the darkroom I have no money left to buy some good stop bath. I heard some people saying on this forum that you can just use water as a stop bath. I would like to do that, but I was wondering how it works? Do you use it the same way you would use a stop bath? I did a google search trying to figure all this out and so many sites said so many different things, I didn't know which was right, so I was hoping you could help me out!
Thanks!
