After reading through some of the posts in this category of UER, I have found some of the posts about social engineering very interesting. I have been searching around on the internet for sites, forums, or books about social engineering as it applies to life. However, I keep finding that most of the sites about social engineering focus primarily on hacking peoples minds so they divulge personal info. That is the aspect that I am not very fascinated by. What I am getting at, is that I am more focused on the communication aspect, which can manipulate people, or convince them of certain things. Not usually for malicious purposes. There are a few people in my life, who seem to have communication skills, paired with the ability to read people well. For example, one of those people gets pulled over for speeding- they seem like the type of person who is most capable of talking themselves out of it. Or another example, they seem like they have skills beyond the average person, and may be more likely to get permission from a building owner to explore a location. I would really like a fun conversation, some links, or book suggestions that would cover this topic. Basically, I want to learn methods to improve my own skills to be more successful communicating in all aspects of my life. There may also be another term used to describe exactly what I am looking for other than social engineering-- I have not found it though...

WOW, this board is dead! I was hoping to spark a fun conversation. If anybody who has viewed this is interested in the topic, I found a book similar to what I am looking for. It is about Neuro-Linguistic Programming!

You could look into Scientology... they are the kings of social engineering. From the minute you walk in the door, they're working on brainwashing you. You're going to have to break the concept down a little. Explain things a little more. I'm not totally following it, and I'm not going to go read a fat book about it just to have a discussion.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy. -George Carlin (1937 - 2008) | |
...you can't NLP your way out of a speeding ticket.

Vectored Approach- I will look into Scientology. I wasn't expecting anybody else to read a book, just hoping for some social engineering discussion. MindHacker- That is your proof that I have not read the book yet ;)

NLP (at least on a basic level) involves a buildup longer than one conversation and touch to anchor feelings... both things cops aren't big fans of. Some other social engineering principles could be brought to bear though. If you're exploring all this take a look at the "pick up artist" community. Speed-seduction is all about taking advantage of psychological glitches.

Sorry to dig up a dead thread, but there is a book written by Kevin Mitnick, (famous phone phreaker) called "the art of deception" that taught me how to talk my way out of a variety of different situations. Highly recommended. http://fr.thehacka...t_of_Deception.pdf

Another topic you may want to research are the logical fallacies. Knowing the logical fallacies you are able to determine the BS someone is trying to feed you. You can also use the fallacies for your own interests. Let me know if it is something you are interested in, I can send you some websites to check out.
